Welcome Lisa Star The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Steve Ehrmann] yes [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Yes, I can hear you, Joanna. [LaNita Kirby RCCC] [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Joanna, thanks for the compliments on my color choice. My teenage sons have declared this Easter is the year they "graduate" from dyeing eggs to Tie-dying t-shirts. I guess you could say I'm getting myself prepared for the events to come. [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Here's the URL for the slides, Joanna: http://www.flickr.com/photos/longpd/sets/72157600050634631/detail/ [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Bravo! [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Earlier on, Steve had posted several links that he may be bringing back. [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Cool! I love being a virtual guinea pig1 [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Phil's name is lit up now [Jim Mazoue] Phil's name is blue [Steve Ehrmann] But it's sunny [LaNita Kirby RCCC] The weather is quite marvelous here in Kannapolis. Perfect for Easter fun. [LaNita Kirby RCCC] You are free to visit us anytime, Joanna. We'll even make a tie-dyed t-shirt for you! [Lisa Star] Thanks! [Lisa Star] Full archive including links available by Monday [Don Carter NAU] and dead [Dra] hi everybody [Lisa Star] hi Dra! [Lisa Star] Glad to have you here! [Lisa Star] How's Mali? [Dra] hey jo [Dra] me too [Dra] everything is fine [Dra] how is everybody donw there ? [Lisa Star] synch browsing only applies to web browser [Phil_Long] Hi Everyone [Bob Beichner NCSU] Hi Phil [Georgia Michalicek NAU] [Steve Ehrmann] [Bill Jacobs] The five minute briefings are a good way to ensure that half the participants are lost from the start because they haven't looked at it. [Renee Shaffer] I thought that it was very benefical for a quick overview and get us ready for the presentation today. [LaNita Kirby RCCC] Definitely a worthwhile activity--both before webinars and as supplements(advertisements too) to future webinars. [Janet Fore Saint Marys College] Briefing--useful. good for context. [Sue Espinoza] Yes, about continuing to provide these previews of the sessions -- they are great before, as well as to review afterwards. :-) [SteveGilbert TLTG] All resources, links mentioned in this session are availalbe, including the 5-minute briefing at http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070406LearningSpaces.htm [Karen Ryan -UWRF group] 5 min previews are a great idea. [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/facilities/activities-TOC.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] Reminder: You can save a complete copy of the transcript of this text chat from the beginning until the current comment at any time - use the File menu option "Save Text Chat to File" [Don Carter NAU] in our enviroment, bolted chairs can be purhcased as part of new construction $, whereas moveable ones are not [SteveGilbert TLTG] Sounding good today Phil! [Lisa Star] http://www.flickr.com/photos/longpd/sets/72157600050634631/detail/ [Mike Dabney Hawaii Pacific Un-] Previews serve many functions--move most folks to the same page, raise questions, prompt reflection, increase engagement--just as in any learning setting. And of course, since not everyone will play, facilitators need to review. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Links to Phil's Flickr slides are avail from same web page as other resources for this session [Bob Beichner NCSU] The NCSU Learning Commons is a very nice space with lots of technology available, along with comfortable group and individual spaces. [Sue Espinoza] Looks great, Bob -- is this open 24/7? :-) [Joe Williams NCSU] 24/5 ! [Sue Espinoza] :-) [Bob Beichner NCSU] I believe it is. It just opened within the past month. There are computers, laptops to borrow, ipods to borrow, plasma screens, etc., etc. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Phil just mentioned human factors. Interesting to consider differences among those who use a space. What ways do some physical features of the teaching/learning space have different effects on individuals because of their different cultural backgrounds? Similar questions for learning styles, teaching styles? [Don Carter NAU] seamfull environments, rather than seamless [SteveGilbert TLTG] Don, did you coin that term "seamfull" which I like - can imagine using it for lots of things! [Renee Shaffer] Love the term "front porch"! [Don Carter NAU] no..from Adam Greenfield "Everyware" [Mauri Collins UNLV] We don't have too many good porches here...but we regularly trip over students sitting and laying on the corridor (highly polished) floors, busy ipodding or texting [Steve Ehrmann] Here's a hallway at Virginia Tech that serves as a porch for the classrooms lining the hallway http://www.tltgroup.org/images/Torgersen2.jpg Welcome Lisa Star The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Mauri Collins UNLV] This is my second Uni with a coffee shop built in the Library - at RIT it increased traffic in the library significantly!! [Renee Shaffer] What would you think of a library at a major state university that forbids talking or eating... Don't think that it is very supportive for students and that is why they don't frequent it very much. [Sally Gilbert] Aty Valparaiso, there are fireplaces in the library! [Bonnie Hunter] As Barnes and N and Starbucks have discovered. [catherine petersen] NAU Cline Library has a popular coffee shop "The Scholar's Corner" [SteveGilbert TLTG] Always important to consider 4 basic food groups when planning such activities: caffeine, sugar, fat, alcohol [Bonnie Hunter] Steve, you forgot chocolate! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Ooops.... 5 [Renee Shaffer] That is where I see a lot of students- B & N and Starbuck or Panera's. [Sally Gilbert] The noise factor fascinates me. Some students don't seem to be distracted by noise- and they don';t have headsets on! [StevenB] Valparaiso is a great example of strategic design - it encourages the collaboration of students, faculty and librarian - the design of the building makes it happen without forcing the issue [SteveGilbert TLTG] MIT still have special area within library that is open 24/7 while much of remainder must be closed in late evening, early morning? Has that 24/7 space been changing in usage, appointments, etc, structure? [Steve Ehrmann] So people wandering in can attach their laptops to the big screen so everyone in their group can see [Bob Beichner NCSU] I have no data to support this, but I think that today's students are better at filtering out a lot of noise and utilizing selective attention. [Renee Shaffer] Bob, that is what I think also. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Valparaiso has one of the most interesting learning/teaching spaces I've ever seen - the quite large room in which a variety of simulations (tangible - bodies, etc.) that appears to be a hospital ward... [StevenB] Food can become a problem when students start taking meals out of the cafe and into classrooms, study areas, etc - trash, mess, food smells that irritate others, etc. It is a challenge to balance wanting a welcoming space with the need for keeping things clean and attractive for everyone [Sally Gilbert] At the U of Tilburg in the Netherlands, it was fascinating to see that the powers that be were actually payiong attention to the configurations and furniture that the students utilized or shunned. Don't know if that caused them to spend money differently, though. [Mauri Collins UNLV] "Continuous partial attention" - problem is we can think faster than people talk and have spare cycles left over when we are reading...the NetGen has just discovered how to use ALL their cognitive cycles...all at once [Cindy Russell UTHSC] The FedEx Institute of Technology (http://fedex.memphis.edu/index.shtml) is an amazing space - you can read about its meeting/group spaces at http://bf.memphis.edu/conferences/facility.php - for large or small groups/teams - designed for just stopping in the hallway and brainstorming (fabulous marker boards - all around the halls). One of the StarTrek type conference rooms similar to where Kirk and McCoy were on trial in Star Trek VI - don't look at for things now, but have a look later! [Joe Williams NCSU] NCSU students have touched on issues of noise level and mess on our learning commons discussion board, http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/learningcommons/ [Renee Shaffer] Talked to students at Clemson U. whose library was just crammed with students. They said that they felt relaxed in their learning environment and ENJOYED being there. As the pizza delivery guy came by to deliver their pizza, I understood. [Troy Challenger] Yes we do have a 24x7 facility. It is called the parking lot. [Troy Challenger] But it does offer wireless. [catherine petersen] With the idea of blended learning and virtual spaces i think we need to begin to seriously consider limited scheduling of face to face experineces and save resources in outdated buildings [Troy Challenger] And everyone has a window. [Sue Espinoza] Hadn't thought about the parking lot, Troy, but I do see that happening. :-) [Phil_Long] [Sally Gilbert] is this the replacement for the Drive-in? [lynn] could you type this address in so I can click on this to take a look? thanks, [Troy Challenger] Yes..but no window service. [Phil_Long] Ateliers [Darren Cambridge] Any examples from heavily commuter campuses? [Sue Espinoza] Great question, Darren -- was wondering that, too. :-) [LoriW] This is Bill from MCC - not to go off topic, but MCC and SUNY are doing a research project for designing learning spaces in Second Life... [Mauri Collins UNLV] UNLV - don't have pictures yet, but our new Student Union Extension includes a lot of open learning spaces and plug-ins and it will be open LOONG hours [Darren Cambridge] Our Johnson Center is probably the best example at Mason. Not 24/7, but pretty close: http://jcweb.gmu.edu/. [StevenB] Not surprised to hear the library was crammed with students; provide a good "third space" for them and they will use it extensively [Phil_Long] Darren - Estrella Mtn CC in the Phoenix area has some new learningspaces built with the commuter student in mind. [Staci Milligan] I am at a commuter campus and they just put in a new extension building. They designed the classrooms very poorly and very traditionally (non-flexible, all facing front, awful desks) but unfortunately I can't find any photos... [Phil_Long] They were built with consulting help form Herman-Miller if I recall correctly. [Bob Beichner NCSU] As part of the SCALE-UP project project at NC State and other places, we've looked very closely at things like furniture and whiteboard use. We found round tables do better at supporting collaboration. Then we tried four different diameters and found 7 foot tables for 9 students (3 teams of 3) worked best for us. This was determined by focus groups, videotape analysis, field notes, interviews, etc. We also found the kinds of interactions we promoted depended on whether the whi [SteveGilbert TLTG] [SteveGilbert TLTG] Anyone who has a microphone ready to ask a question or make a comment? From Lisa Star: reports several people have asked something like "Any examples from heavily commuter campuses? " [Phil_Long] Bob's research there is THE most thorough and well one of any on the planet. [Mauri Collins UNLV] http://studentlife.unlv.edu/facilities/su-floorplans.htm [Sue Espinoza] Phil, do you have a link to where there is a description of the spaces at Estrella Mtn CC? [Phil_Long] I'll take a look. Hang on a second. [Darren Cambridge] Lots on Estrella here: http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/awareness/studio.asp [Don Carter NAU] any ideas/suggestions/studies about how informal spaces are integrated with formal classes and their formal spaces near by? [Phil_Long] If you search Flickr for "estrella mountain community college" you'll see a whole bunch of useful images. [Janet Fore Saint Marys College] The Integrated Learning Center at the Univ of Arizona with classrooms, First Year Center and Information Commons (Library) all co-located is an example of formal and informal spaces nearby. [Troy Challenger] Furniture dictates pedagogy. We get our furniture from Prison Industries. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Some of us have "intermittent partial attention" [Lisa Star] Troy - did I got to your school? [Lisa Star] sorry - go [Phil_Long] Don - yes, consider doing a learning activitiy analysis - defining what the kinds of learning activiites you want your students to be exposed to and then work backward. I can point you to a couple of dissertations about this. [SteveGilbert TLTG] CPA; Intersection of formal/informal spaces; commuter vs. residence [Don Carter NAU] that would be great Phil, thanks [Sue Espinoza] For largely commuter campuses, the issue is to have places where commuters and resident students can meet whenever, even if all are not on campus. :-) [Troy Challenger] Stanford had some interesting spaces, they called "collaboratoriums" - beanbags and such. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Why it might take 20 years to get to new models of buildings: Problem of Not Learning to Improve Learning/Teaching Spaces from Experience Very few academics get much experience with designing and then using buildings (learning/teaching spaces) and then being involved with designing another building (learning/teaching space) when, in the second cycle, improvements could be made based on thoughtful reflection about experience from previous cycle! [Troy Challenger] Geocaching offers a whole new learning space concept. [Sue Espinoza] We need the integration of both groups -- resident and commuter, to minimize the divide that sometimes occurs. [Don Carter NAU] ha ha Phil [SteveGilbert TLTG] Impartial Contiguous Apprehension [Darren Cambridge] Sue: I wonder what role we have in facilitating off campus learning spaces. Does this suggest a need to help students think about what kinds of spaces work well for which activities? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Darren: How can we enable more people in all roles to think about what kinds of spaces work well for which activietis? and for which individuals? [Don Carter NAU] another issue is that in renovation and new buildings, we can get actually bolted furnishings in the capital budget, and thus little is available in FF&E for more flexible furnishings [Darren Cambridge] Steve: Right. [Janet Fore Saint Marys College] Re attention/noise management, Johnson Center at Geo Mason had white noise machines a while ago. I don't know if they are still in use. [Troy Challenger] Students with varying disabilities require special learning spaces that minimize distractions. [Sue Espinoza] Is this where we need to find ways to provide online meeting areas outside of the online CMS classrooms that are restricted to members of each specific class? [Steve Ehrmann] When I was at Evergreen in teh 1970s, they were able to reserve part of the capital budget of a couple new buildings nad spend that money on equipment for studnet research (5% or more? it was LOTS of money) [Georgia Michalicek NAU] Sue: we recently did focus groups on our portal use at NAU and students requested degree/or college specific chat rooms [Troy Challenger] Steve..that is very important...changing the financial formula from bricks and mortar to student support services. [SteveGilbert TLTG] At St. Edward U. several otherwise unattractive classrooms became quite attractive for providing some kinds of services BECAUSE ... the building is located immediately adjacent to a parking lot used by faculty likely to need those services.... LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION... [Sue Espinoza] Georgia, how will that be addressed there, do you know yet? :-) [Georgia Michalicek NAU] So far, people are worried about having to monitor their chats [Darren Cambridge] Janet: Not any more. (I'm teaching there 16 hours a week at the moment, so I'd probably know if they were.) In the Johnson Center, the segmentation of the space helps. There is a gradition between loud very public spaces and more isolated spaces. My students actually tell me they like to go to the JC so that they can concentrate. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Very interesting distinction from Phil - attention to external stimuli vs. inward-directed attention [Steve Ehrmann] A book that is still wonderful, THE OREGON EXPERIMENT, by Chris Alexander, is a great way to think (among many other things) the parking issue SteveG just mentioned [Karen Schwalm GCC AZ] Phil, could send a cite for that article? [Bob Beichner NCSU] Some of the history and research behind the SCALE-UP project (which looked at room layout) is at [Georgia Michalicek NAU] Sue: we will attempt a pilot possibly with one college or major [Phil_Long] Bob B. - do you want to chime in on the issue PRS devices? [Anthony Helm] We've started using clickers in a few classes, experimentally here at Clark U. [SteveGilbert TLTG] 3 Minutes until "closing" ; then for those whose schedules permit, another 30 minutes in which we would REALLY like to hear more voices! [Bob Beichner NCSU] If you have to lecture, then you MUST do something to keep the students involved. Clickers are the best way I've seen to do that. I haven't done any studies, but others have. [Sue Espinoza] Georgia, did your focus groups also indicate other types of online resources (blogs, wikis, other doc sharing, etc)? I can see where all could be helpful together -- having the resources that people need when they need. :-) [Georgia Michalicek NAU] They did not mention other social software, Sue, in the context of the portal, but do have that available in a few classes [Steve Ehrmann] THe use of chat rooms I mentioned is exemplified by the chatroom activity in this "class." [Georgia Michalicek NAU] Sue: I'm sure that would come to mind once one resource such as chat becomes available; thanks for the idea [Steve Ehrmann] I think the response to the question on the whiteboard is fascinating. Almost no one is unsure; different institutions appear to be responding quite differently to this opportunity/threat. [SteveGilbert TLTG] SWITCHING TO FINAL REMARKS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, THEN 30 MINUTES MORE - HOPE TO HEAR MORE OF YOU! [Michael Busnach] http://www4.uwm.edu/ltc/srs/ [Sue Espinoza] Isn't the question not just are faculty using online communication more, but how is the method changing/expanding? (threaded discussions, blogs, chat, etc.)? [Steve Ehrmann] yes [Lisa Star] Reminder that you can save your own copy of the chat area by using ATL + Z or going to the file menu and selecting [SteveGilbert TLTG] If not "insight" perhaps "excite"? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Phil: ASK STUDENTS WHERE THEY LEARN BEST! [Michael Busnach] more research on clickers http://telr.osu.edu/clickers/resources/articles.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] Can we do that on a later FridayLive!?? Could some of you provide some students? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Phil: Ask students to keep time diaries [SteveGilbert TLTG] Phil: Ask students to take and share pictures to illustrate what they like/dislike and use somethign like Flickr ... [SteveGilbert TLTG] SteveE: Evaluation is like keeping your eyes open when walking (in daylight?) [Don Carter NAU] here is NAU's clicker info page. At the bottom are links to research & resources..http://fm.instrdev.nau.edu:591/clickers/ [Don Carter NAU] http://fm.instrdev.nau.edu:591/clickers/ [SteveGilbert TLTG] SteveE: Need more Evulations of VERY expensive resources - buildings, etc.; study what is going on now - not just waiting for waht vendors will offer soon! [Phil_Long] Thanks Don! [Troy Challenger] Could you provide virtual food next time? Wine and cheese? [Steve Ehrmann] Here's a page from our learning space area on clickers: http://www.tltgroup.org/Facilities/Facilities_and_Activities/patterns.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] Troy, we'll try! [Phil_Long] May I pour you another? [Lisa Star] SteveG likes reisling! [Steve Ehrmann] here's the MIT page on the aero/astro building [Anthony Helm] Troy, you mean you didn't bring yours along today? [Lisa Star] we can bring that next time [SteveGilbert TLTG] [sshhh, Troy, I don't want anyone to know!] [Lisa Star] session homepage: http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070406LearningSpaces.htm [Phil_Long] The aero astro images are on my Flickr page if you want to peruse them. The key to their redesign was 1) doing a learnign activity analysis and 2) coming up with a curricular model called Conceive Design Implement and Operate (CDIO) [sally gilbert] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/fridaylive/closinglinks.htm [Lisa Star] we'll have the complete text from this chat area so you can find all the resources referenced today [Yvette Dulohery MNSU] Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale has also focused on "computer access" by increased "handicapped access" in support of the large number of students bringing their laptops to campus in wheeled/travel bags. [Phil_Long] we're professional steve ;- [Phil_Long] The LMA slide set has five slides on learning activity analysis Don (on my Flickr site). [Lisa Star] We've had a really great chat today! [Lisa Star] you can save a copy of the chat for yourself at FILE>Save Text Chat to file [Steve Ehrmann] hi bob [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes [sally gilbert] hi bonb [Lisa Star] hi Bob [Anthony Helm] it's working! [Bonnie Hunter] it's working bob [Steve Ehrmann] we can her you [Lisa Star] we heard you [Michael Busnach] can hear you bob [Don Carter NAU] I hear you [Maureen Greenbaum] i hear u [SteveGilbert TLTG] BobB: Wants research about multi-tasking of students [Anthony Helm] good question... [sally gilbert] I think that the CPA is not the same thing as multi-tasking [Anthony Helm] I'm of the opinion that they are better at multi-tasking in general, but not that they perform at a higher ability because of it. [Anthony Helm] which seems to be what Phil is saying. [Bob Beichner NCSU] Thanks [Steve Ehrmann] Bob Beichner is a real pioneer of learning space design with his SCALE-UP program at North Carolina STate. Here's more on SCALE-UP and other studio classrooms http://www.tltgroup.org/Facilities/Facilities_and_Activities/Studio.htm [Don Carter NAU] I recall about a year ago seeing a result that females showed much less decrimented ability than males [Renee Shaffer] Phil, Could you place in on the TLT site so everyone can look at it? [Anthony Helm] LOL! [Bill Jacobs] The NYTimes article is: Slow Down, Brave Multitasker, and Don’t Read This in Traffic (March 25, 2007) [Bonnie Hunter] In K-12 we're identifying more students with ADD and other learning issues. What modifications of learning spaces do we need to consider for them? [Lisa Star] hi dra! [Anthony Helm] yes [Lisa Star] i hear you [Renee Shaffer] yes [Bonnie Hunter] yes, Dra [Steve Ehrmann] a little faint but I can hear you [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes , hear but rather soft [Michael Busnach] yes but it's a bit faint [Steve Ehrmann] that's fine [Anthony Helm] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mali [SteveGilbert TLTG] Dra - working at Distnace Learning Center in Mali - coordinate with some universities in Mali & Howard U in Wash. DC [SteveGilbert TLTG] DRA: wants teaching strategies for large groups - lectures, ... [SteveGilbert TLTG] Wants "low-threshold" how to facilitate small group discussion in large group course [Steve Ehrmann] Eric Mazur, Harvard [Dra] lecutre hall 50-200 students [SteveGilbert TLTG] Mazur: Ask conceptually difficult questions to large group in lecture hall (not easy to answer from brief calculaation or memory); give each student colored cards to use in responding to multiple choice questions (percursor to "clickers") [Bob Beichner NCSU] The key to Mazur's ConcepTest questions is that about 50% of the class would get it right. If all got it right, there is no need to ask it. If everyone gets it wrong, they weren't ready for it. With half the class knowing the answer, there will be great peer discussions. Asking the question again results in a much higher percentage correct. [Troy Challenger] CSU Monterey Bay now has a new President, Dr. Dianne Harrison [SteveGilbert TLTG] SteveE/Mazur strategy: ask students who offered differences to talk together in small groups and attempt to resolve differernces of initial responses - fosters deeper learning [Bonnie Hunter] Anyone have any solutions to problems that might come up in these spaces in-between learning spaces? trash? grafitti? those students that are easily distracted (can't ban them from the space -- right)? what else could come up? [Phil_Long] Turns out that at least in the experiences we have had this has NOT been a problem - perhaps surprisingly. It may be that showing that you 'care' about a space has more benefits than we might have expected. [Don Carter NAU] thanks all...gotta run [Steve Ehrmann] Bye Don [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cindy: FedEx Inst. of Tech - on campus of Univ. of Memphis; polling from seats in fixed-tier seating; large video screen, speakers [Steve Ehrmann] Cindy what are those big Bose speakers for? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cindy: wireless, starbucks, ... well-conceptualized for huge groups as well as small groups [sally gilbert] and money! [Steve Ehrmann] What sorts of things are they playing all day? What would you play? [Lisa Star] sounds like an airport [Lisa Star] Sue- that is what this time is for! [SteveGilbert TLTG] SueE: What about commuters who cannot spend much time on campus? Online? Temporary? Collaborative work spaces? [SteveGilbert TLTG] What about emerging role of cell-phones-on-steroids? [Sue Espinoza] :-) [Bob Beichner NCSU] Some of my students use their cell phone cameras to take class notes for them. They don't bother with notebooks anymore! [Lisa Star] genius! [Steve Ehrmann] Bob, somehow that makes me think of the New Yorker cartoon of the teacher on videotape being recorded by bunches of tape recorders on desks! [SteveGilbert TLTG] At most institutions today, still the case that faculty talk more about how to prevent studenst from using cell phoens in clas than about how to use them productively [Bob Beichner NCSU] Hmmmm.. [Sue Espinoza] Bob, have you seen problems with cell phones and test-taking? [Bob Beichner NCSU] No problems, but the rules are clearly stated in advance. [Bob Beichner NCSU] I use Apple's Remote Desktop software to make sure students taking tests aren't using IM or email when they shouldn't. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Dra, KarenS .... can I encourage you to speak aloud again? [SteveGilbert TLTG] JimS? [Karen Schwalm GCC AZ] Arizona! [Lisa Star] NZ is what new zeland comes up as [SteveGilbert TLTG] hear you well Nick [Dra] i have to go now [Lisa Star] bye dra [Dra] see you next friday [Lisa Star] thanks for coming! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Nick: We do NOT have the resources for these kinds of things... what about cultural issues? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Nick: Relaxation an issue - group work is better in CLOSED space within library [Steve Ehrmann] closed - literally with doors that can close? [SteveGilbert TLTG] In what ways do some physical features of the teaching/learning space have different effects on individuals because of their different cultural backgrounds? [Bill Jacobs] There is a high demand in my library for group study rooms. I think the informal gathering areas are very much the second choice for real work. [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes, very loud [Steve Ehrmann] would you make the same choice the students did? or would you also work in a group space that is open? [Nick Kearney] i do both [Nick Kearney] but consciously [Steve Ehrmann] If the open spaces are really noisy and crowded, for example, I'd probably avoid them too [Nick Kearney] if you see what i mean [Nick Kearney] to see what it is like [SteveGilbert TLTG] Karen: how to get students to construct conversation with people outside of her class/course... with friends, family because students "NEED" more interaction with close-by individuals! [sally gilbert] that's reallyn intriguing [Nick Kearney] yes that is interesting, is that extending the space? do we need other ways to understand the space? [Anthony Helm] Thanks everyone. [Steve Ehrmann] Karen, are you interested in (digital) writing these days? http://www.tltgroup.org/resources/gx/Digital-WAC.htm If so, let me know. I'd like to talk. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Karen: talking about community college students; some on campus, some online, some high school students, some adults, .... [sally gilbert] what do you mean by "rehearse?" [SteveGilbert TLTG] Karen: "Develop literacy on an unfamiliar topic" [SteveGilbert TLTG] KarenS: "rehearsing" means devleoping language expertise [sally gilbert] working from plenty not scarcity [SteveGilbert TLTG] SueE: works with grad sutdnets; uses blog where students respond to different topics each week; assigned all studetns to get someone OUTSIDE the class to respond to somethign on the blog!
