[SteveGilbert TLTG] Digitization AND access to newspapers! [Crystal Nielsen NNU] What was the URL for the NDNP? [Lisa Star] http://edsitement.neh.gov [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.loc.gov/ndnp/ [SteveGilbert TLTG] Challenge Grants [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.mith2.umd.edu/ - Maryland Inst. [Steve Ehrmann] Perseus is a wonderfully interesting case of creating an academic resources that was designed to last for decades, despite IT changes since 1985. [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/ [Lisa Star] Perseus Project: www.perseus.tufts.edu/ [SteveGilbert TLTG] If Greg Crane has been talking about this since 1990s, he must need a drink of water. [SteveGilbert TLTG] IN what ways can info tech enable undergrads to do "traditional" grad-level activities? What, then, should doctoral students do? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Correct: Everyone - not limited to reserach [SteveGilbert TLTG] "Interested in" = able to fund [Sally Gilbert] what's missing? [SteveGilbert TLTG] e.g., do "history of arts" but not creation or performance of arts [Steve Ehrmann] writing/composition, an area where NEH once made very important contributions [SteveGilbert TLTG] NEH & TLTG like librarians [SteveGilbert TLTG] Collaboration is key theme for NEH DHI (and TLTG) and librarians! [Lisa Star] I like the challenge grants icon [SteveGilbert TLTG] So... applications should emphasize or focus on FUNCTIONS more than SUBJECT AREA? [theresenoonanSMC] 56? [SteveGilbert TLTG] States + Territories = 56 [SteveGilbert TLTG] Don't send paper [SteveGilbert TLTG] Does submitting prelim have ANY potential negative impact? [SteveGilbert TLTG] (s)M = "some merit"; (N)R = "not recommended" [SteveGilbert TLTG] So, DUH, send prelim when permitted! [SteveGilbert TLTG] [SteveGilbert TLTG] Digital Hum. Init began 2006 [SteveGilbert TLTG] IMLS/NEH: http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/Digital_Partnership.html [SteveGilbert TLTG] [I think of this pattern as "Bozo Under the Sea" method.] [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.acls.org/cyberinfrastructure/cyber.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] Maybe you could provide some access to the work of that April meeting via FridayLive! [SteveGilbert TLTG] www.neh.gov/news/nehconnect.html [Crystal Nielsen NNU] Could you please show the grants URL again? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Anyone want to ask a question audibly? [fred winter neh] grants.neh.gov/dhi.asp [Crystal Nielsen NNU] yep! [Beryline Temples UCA] Infoed [SteveGilbert TLTG] Lots of good info! [ArtaSzathmary] sorry I am late, the roads were dicey here [SteveGilbert TLTG] Would it be helpful for us to offer more in-depth info about one or more of the 5 programs in anotehr session? [Miko Pattie] Yes, esp. the start-up grants [TaraBaillargeon_Kansas-State] Yes, I'd like an entire session on the start-up grants [Beryline Temples UCA] ditto Tara [Kaijsa Calkins UWyo] Yes, esp. start-ups [fred winter neh] i'm thinking that would be a good summary question at the end. my preference is to continue the info dump so folks can phrase their questions based on that. [Miko Pattie] Do we need to talk to neh about the start-up grants too? [SteveGilbert TLTG] OK, we'll keep forging ahead! for 4 more minutes! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Maybe the opportunities for collaboration could be a major focus for one of the addtional sessons - how to form the coalitions, how to apply, etc. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Good example of grant prog that REQUIRES collaboration! [SteveGilbert TLTG] We can come back to this one at 3pm EDT - for those who can stay with us a little longer [Crystal Nielsen NNU] Are NEH grants limited to public universities/ K12, or can those of us from private universities also apply? [Crystal Nielsen NNU] Great - thank you. [fred winter neh] one last thing I didn't say -- all applications for funding from NEH are now required to be submitted through the new federal grants portal, grants.gov. sign up for grants.gov and plan to apply before the last minute to be sure your application goes through without any problems. [fred winter neh] steve, i just typed it [Beryline Temples UCA] I would like to get a copy of Fred's presentation to share with our faculty, is this possible? [SteveGilbert TLTG] This session will be available within a couple days (maybe much earlier) [Beryline Temples UCA] Thank you. [fred winter neh] my pleasure! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Really nice job, Fred! Lots of info, well-organized. Exciting, encouraging! [Sally Gilbert] sallygilbert@tltgroup.org [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] sallygilbert@tltgroup.org or kurtz@tltgroup.org for topics/ideas [fred winter neh] i read it first in "still life with woodpecker" [theresenoonanSMC] what percentage of grant proposals are funded? I'm considering a revision/resubmission cycle a different proposal. [JeanCoppolaPaceU_NY] are sample proposals available via the website? [Sally Gilbert] The URL for contributions to support these free services is http://www.tltgroup.org/listserv/tlt-swg.html We appreciate your considering support. [fred winter neh] we send samples as email attachments [SteveGilbert TLTG] Would NEH be "able" to support a "process" project? With difficulty! Too generic, broad. BUT..... [Donna Souder TWU] TWU is currently working on a proposal for a start-up grant for the initiative... we are working in concert with our ESFL dept. (MA English and PhD Rhetoric) and our Women's Collection to construct an archive on romantic author Felecia Hemans and her contribution to the humanities, women's studies, and more... any particular advice as we complete our narrative? Our "team" includes a Romanticist, a technology expert, a textual editor, and one eager doctoral candidate... other thoughts? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Focus more on "How would we do this in teh Humanities in ways that would be substantively different from other fields? [SteveGilbert TLTG] April 3, 2007 Deadline for..... [SteveGilbert TLTG] Start-up [Donna Souder TWU] We're aiming for the April 3rd deadline (believe it or not)! [Donna Souder TWU] excellent - thank you for the advice... should the the draft we send to NEH come through the grant.gov format? [SteveGilbert TLTG] send to fwinter@neh.gov [Donna Souder TWU] just a doc then is okay...? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Attachment SMALLER THAN 5 MEGS [fred winter neh] fwinter@neh.gov or dhi@neh.gov [Donna Souder TWU] great --- thank you so much [SteveGilbert TLTG] Fred, 5 MEG limit on attachments via email? via other mechanism? [Steve Ehrmann] I think his connection was lost. Or else I bored him right offline! [Beryline Temples UCA] yes [Steve Ehrmann] yes [Sally Gilbert] yes [Shari McCurdy] yes [Lisa Star] i hear fred [Donna Souder TWU] yes [Donna Souder TWU] loud and clear [Hugh Burns TWU] We hear THE MAN! [Lois Marshall LU] Yes. Lois at Lincoln Univ [Julie Lytle] I am at a small seminary in Cambridge MA. We recognize that many of these who want the type of education we offer cant access us-cost, distance, time. We have been experimenting with intensive courses both face-to-face and online and are beginning a model of blended learning that incorporates web group conferencing and self paced modules overlaid with Blackboard for text-based conversations. We are interested in formation as well as information sharing. Would this be a startup grant possibility? [Hugh Burns TWU] The NEH's willingness to see these archives as electronic portfolios, digital writing, etc. [Julie Lytle] Something like ethic [Julie Lytle] ethics [SteveGilbert TLTG] 1994-5 marquette u - synch t/l ot greek [Lisa Star] Fred is very faint and I cannot follow what he is saying [Lisa Star] I also hear your breathing loudly over what he is saying [Lisa Star] better [Julie Lytle] SUPER! Thank you! [Julie Lytle] Can you put the slide with Fred's contact info back up? [Hugh Burns TWU] Deep in the heart of Texas, we wonder if we should coordinate our proposal with the Texas Council of the Humanities, the State NEH folks. If time permits.... [SteveGilbert TLTG] fwinter@neh.gov fwinter@neh.gov (202) 606-8287 [Donna Souder TWU] Coordinating proposals -- with our State NEH? [SteveGilbert TLTG] hum councils - 56 regional - more outreach [Donna Souder TWU] We feel like our particular proposal might be vertically aligned with some of our state initiatives -- any conflict of interests to ahev a letter of committment from them...? [Donna Souder TWU] great comments --- thank you! [Hugh Burns TWU] Thank you! [Lois Marshall LU] Thank You. [Beryline Temples UCA] Great session, thank you [Shari McCurdy] thank u [JeanCoppolaPaceU_NY] Thx! [Shari McCurdy] bye [Lisa Star] recording has stopped
