[Lisa Star] Hi Michael [Carl DiNardo] yes [Drew Smith] just fine [Lisa Star] we hear you [Maureen Akins] I can hear you [Vidya] Hear you michael! [Shauna Schullo] I can hear you [Sue Espinoza] I hear you , Michael. :-) [Jan Sauer] Michael you're on! [paul] hi michael [john prusch] sounds great [K Stedwill] LOUD AND CLEAR [Drew Smith] let it up when you're done [Lisa Star] nope, we hear you [K Stedwill] oops sorry for the caps... [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] If you yell loudly enough you can hear yourself through the earphones (heh heh) [Lisa Star TLT Group] We can hear you! [Drew Smith] quite nice! [Lisa Star] I hear Charlotte [Carl DiNardo] hi charlotte [Jan Sauer] Yep Charl;oote [Maureen Akins] Yes [Shauna Schullo] Is there an indication for sound level in this software [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] We heard Michael! [Jean Kent] Yes [Lisa Star] sound good charlotte [Drew Smith] Shauna, yes, the vertical bar [Drew Smith] yes! [Lisa Star] I hear Vidya! [Jan Sauer] Yes [Jean Kent] yes [Lisa Star] sound good [Carl DiNardo] yes [Michael Strait] yes! [Vidya] yayyy! /claps/ :-) [Geoff Mathay] Yep [Maureen Akins] I can hear you fine. [Jae Fisher] yes [Vidya] me too! :-) [Shauna Schullo] If you turn off the control key, do ou need to hold down the microphone button or is it click on click off [Carl DiNardo] wow [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] I'll begin recording now. Great to have the groups... we want to learn how to serve this kind of "hybrid" mixture! Welcome Lisa Star The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Kim Cullinan] How are you creating a text box? [Kim Cullinan] I did it! [Drew Smith] LOL [Carl DiNardo] yes [Lisa Star] phone number for audio backup: 1-866-866-2244 Users' Pin Code: 704-9928 # [Enid Karr] Enhances: google docs & spreadsheets collaboration [Jan Sauer] Blogs allow quick dissemination of info [Vidya] for my first year seminar class, we used del.icio.us as reserves, and students, of their own volition, began to contribute links to it [Jacque Mundell] Podcasts [Don Carter] enhnace: wikis for collaborative writing [Jane Harris] e-portfolios [USD Web Team] wiki [Maureen Akins] Blogs - sense of actually being there [kotlas] Google Maps [Topsy Smalley] I think it depends on the pedagogical goal. Blogging for an intercultural communications class is something I'm working with a faculty member on. [Lisa Star TLT Group] open communication (facebook) can lead to - too much information [Jacque Mundell] Sharing bookmarks such as del.icio.us [Carl DiNardo] if something is distracting because of glitz, it is not good. [Maureen Akins] Negative - too little thought process behind information [Jan Sauer] I have signed up for so many web 2.0 things that I have forgotten most of them [Kim Cullinan] The use of classroom response systems i.e. clickers for discussion [Vidya] lol Jan, I know that feeling ;-) [Jae Fisher] I agree, Maureen. Just sharing information isn't enough [Drew Smith] Jan, I know what you mean! [Don Carter] the "little thought" can give rise to opportunity for deeper information literacy topics [Lisa Star] If Steve Gilbert is coming through "choppy" it is because of the internet connection on his end... you should hear the other leaders just fine (we hope ) [Vidya] seeing the page with links, that's what it's supposd to be right? [Lisa Star] yup [Lisa Star] To see the complete list of all of the TLT Group's LTAs (low threshold applications) visit the LTA website at: http://zircon.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/lta/ [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Lisa Star, TLT Group, Wiki... NOW SEE SLIDE! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Experiencing... engaging with the content actively [Shauna Schullo] Only on the first prep. After that, they spend more time than me [Shauna Schullo] But then again, I teach via distance [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Depends often on how much/little the faculty member modifies course-related materials each time... probably varies a lot depending on many different factors! [Drew Smith] such as the discipline [Shauna Schullo] Yes, in fact this semester the prep time has been significant as I catch up with the rest of the world [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Such as how much time I have "this term" for this course - varies due to family situation, professional stage, etc. [Carl DiNardo] yes, somethings are often dogmatic, but there may be other ways to present them [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] http://www.tltgroup.org/Seven/Home.htm [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Wiki - "…a Wiki is a collaborative website comprised of the collective work of many authors. …" [From http://ssad.bowdoin.edu:8668/space/Definition+of+a+Wiki Created by mphillip. ] What's a Wiki? Half of a Hawaiian term for "quick" [Vidya] But of course, it's Howard Rheingold :-) [Vidya] His book Smart Mobs focuses almost exclusively on the notion of mob mentality via digital communication tools [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] In our FridayLive! sessions we try to introduce resources and prompt new thinking - we don't worry about going too deeply or being too thorough - but we provide URLs to resources that will provide greater depth and thoroughness. [Vidya] and then learning becomes fun!!! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] We're just about the right amount of time behind our original schedule! [Geoff Mathay] Can you put the link up for the wiki example? [Lisa Star TLT Group] http://traumwerk.stanford.edu:3455/DigitalJournalism07/home This is the website for the course! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Now see "3 information consumer trends" [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] http://www.oclc.org/about/management/default.htm - OCLC Vice President, Member Services, George M. Needham [Michael Strait] Wikis are great. I have started using them in my teaching, and I agree with most of what Lisa had to say about their potential, but most of what was described as uses of a wiki can be done with many different tools, some of which have been around for many years. What a wiki is uniquely well suited for is collaborative development of one coherent text, as in co-authoring a paper. [Lisa Star] we've been using Google Docs and spreadsheets here a lot [Ken Clipperton BVU] Has anyone made a class project out of creating/adding to a wikipedia entry on some subject? This seems like it could be an authentic learning experience. [Vidya] Michael, I co-lead a class focussed on new technologies and their implications for our lives - social and professional. I'd love to chat with you about ways that you are implementing wikis and pick your brains a little at some point. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] KEY POINT: SOME students would prefer NOT to deal with SOME faculty members - who are less satisfying than an ATM! But other students opt to enroll in certain courses at certain instituions BECAUSE they can interact with SOME faculty members! [Vidya] I ahve heard of classes where they've done that Ken, not sure I remember where top of the head [Shauna Schullo] I also like to think that we can give our students more freedom on what in our disciplines we teach. In my class there is always a mix of interests. It is nice if they can choose to learn in a way that meets the needs they have for being in the course whether it is for their job, their degree or just personal satisfaction. [Michael Strait] Vidya, I'd like that too. I'm also teaching a class this winter on new technologies for some educators in Tijuana, Mexico. Should be an interesting cross-cultural experience. [Vidya] well, the NetGen specifically they say, likes to work in small, collaborative groups [Vidya] especially if an environment populated with comfortable seating and a coffee bar ;-) [Jan Sauer] Students prefer practical hands-on, but what about the grounding theory [Vidya] oh wow, that sounds like it's going to be a great experience Michael! [Lisa Star TLT Group] Ken there are some good examples of wikis on subjects - one of the largest areas of growth is in English and Literature wikis. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Good resource about EFFECTIVE collaborative learning: http://www.tltgroup.org/resources/millis.html [Lisa Star TLT Group] Good point Michael - I think you will enjoy the example site - he does a great job at guiding and managing the interaction. Certainly using Wikis to take collaboration, responsibility, and interaction to a new level is possible with these applications. [Bob Roush] What is RSS? [Vidya] I'm not sure though that I'd call SL a Web 2.0 tool per se [Lisa Star] RSS - Real Simple Syndication [Vidya] Bob, RSS is way to ahve information delivered to you via an aggregating tool, rather have to go visit each website [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Audacity does NOT APPEAR user friendly - but with a LITTLE intro, it can be used to do some quite simple and powerful audio editing. [Lisa Star] very low [Carl DiNardo] i love audacity [Lisa Star TLT Group] Drew can you increase the volume? [Shauna Schullo] Can not hear it Drew [Enid Karr] I just hear a buzz [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Sound isn't loud enough for me to hear [Vidya] and for the Mac users, GarageBand makes it very easy too [Michael Strait] sound is barely audible [Vidya] Here's my contention, how is audio in BB a podcast? [PattiD] I have been using NetVibes to track RSS feeds of student blogs and keep current on my personal feeds [Shauna Schullo] Can you send us a link instead that we can listen to later? [Jacque Mundell] Have to go. Enjoyed and learned [Vidya] ok :-) [Vidya] i'm a purist :-) [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Definitions of RSS & "Podcast" are NOT really precise... and the two are closely related for those of us who are "purists" - but it is hard to be much of a "purist" in a field that changes so fast! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Not I! [Vidya] true, but audio on the web is not new at all [Susan Boyd] Need to go...thank you. S.Boyd/SCU [Shauna Schullo] For web 2.0 I feelit should be read write, so I would probably add a bit to an audio recording in a BB course (etc.) that included a means for comments and discussion. [Shauna Schullo] At least it should be two way [Vidya] that certainly comes closer to the Web 2.0 concept Shauna [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Bye to those of you who must leave now. We'll keep going as originally listed - Q&A, etc. for another 10-30 minutes! [Shauna Schullo] Nice use of blogs [Drew Smith] sorry about the sound quality of the audio file [Topsy Smalley] Have to go. Thanks. [bob mckenzie] tx. good info, gotta go [Jae Fisher] Thanks, but I have to run. [K Stedwill] Thank you BFN [Drew Smith] Shauna, I agree, it would be helpful to include feedback for the audio file, such as using comments [Shauna Schullo] Drew, have you considered putting your audio file in the Teams (wiki) or the blog tool in BB so that it could be 2 way? [Drew Smith] I hadn't yet, but I think that's a really good idea [Shauna Schullo] It looks like USF has improved the wiki feature a bit so it might actully be worth while [Drew Smith] Or I could attach it to a BB posting. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Lisa: Try a wiki... with 7 Principles in mind... how it might CONNECT students with faculty (and with each other) [Michael Strait] Yes, Lisa, it's all about being more intentional, whatever you are using. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Lisa: Start somewhere! Experiment! [Shauna Schullo] I find I have serious issues with overload. Anyone have any good thoughts on this? [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] See "Overloaditorium" or new TLTG online workshop about Overload [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Thanks again, Lisa! [Enid Karr] Trying to think of how to utilize some of these things in the training I do (largely one-time sessions on library skills including EndNote) [Shauna Schullo] I need better filters [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Drew: Which areas of your courses are meeting your and students' expectations most poorly? [Vidya] my concern is faculty who come back with, why would I want to use Google Docs over Word? [Enid Karr] Everyone who has access to a computer and Internet has access to Google docs [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Would you like to discuss, specifically, that question about Word vs. Google Docs? I would! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Drew: Address learning styles [Lisa Star TLT Group] They is always someone who will swim against the current - I think the question needs to turn to what would you use Word for? And then what Google docs enhances. [Vidya] Well, I did cite it asn an example of my way that has worked for so long versus something new :-), but I certainly would! [Enid Karr] Collaboration on GD is simple and fun [Michael Strait] One thing that is not new is that it takes a process of development in a community of practice for any of these tools to be used intelligently and effectively. [Drew Smith] Michael, yes, and many are so new, that we're still learning the best practices [Jean Kent] Always appreciate examples of best practices. [Drew Smith] We're still working the bugs out in some of them. And we're also waiting a bit for students to have sufficient technology to use them. [Vidya] Lisa, is the person using Goodle Docs swimming against the current, or is it the faculty who's holding on to Word? [Vidya] Just clarifying here :-) [Jane Harris] I would like to hear more about specific pedagogical examples of effective use of these tools. I am particularly interested in student use of these tools. [Drew Smith] Jane, great! I can address some of that. [Shauna Schullo] wikis are great for group work with your students. I also use blogs for self refelction and introductory exercises. [Carl DiNardo] i agree... today there was quite a bit of talk about wikis. I would enjoy thoughts on the use of other 2.0 utilities such as second life etc. [Jan Sauer] Like Jane, I'd like to have a discussion about a single app and how several people use it successfully. Like del.icio.us [Shauna Schullo] I tired a wiki to build a cumulative timeline for the history of distance learning where the students had to pick an era and add information. It had some bumps and I am revising [Jane Harris] Shauna - do you know about Timeline Creator? It's a bit clumsy, but you can add images and create parallel tabbed timelines. [Shauna Schullo] Blogs are great for any writing project where you would like students to be responsible for their writing. If it is a public blog, they can become not only a member of the leraning community, but maybe even a member of a community of practice in the discipline. [Vidya] just a suggestion to the moderators, i think it might be beneficial to ahve a whole session devoted to immersive worlds like Second Life. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Lots of SELECTED, ANNOTATED resources about educational uses of Web 2.0 resources: http://www.tltgroup.org/blogs.htm [Carl DiNardo] thanks, steve [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Example of inter-linking several KINDS of Web 2.0 resources, see (and subscribe to!] TLT-SWG materials: http://www.tltgroup.org/tlt-swg.htm [Jane Harris] Drew - I like this idea! [Maureen Akins] I find some faculty are resistant to the workload of monitoring student blogs, etc. [Vidya] that is definitely a concern at my campus Maureen [john prusch] Have you had students collaborate on a single blog too? [Carl DiNardo] maureen... you are right, but i think that is a different issue [Shauna Schullo] RSS comes in really handy for monitoring. [Shauna Schullo] I find it maybe is easier than using some of the tools in BB for monitoring new materials created by students. [Maureen Akins] That's a helpful tip. Sometimes learning to tie apps together is the key to success. [Drew Smith] John, I have not had students collaborate on a blog yet, but I could see that a good idea for group research projects [Drew Smith] Then you'd have a group research blog, and you could see how much each student contributes to the group process. [john prusch] Thanks Drew! [PattiD] I agree, Blogs are easy to monitor with RSS readers- [john prusch] Exactly! [Drew Smith] And you could allow other students to make comments to give feedback. [Vidya] RSS is the glue that binds all of these tools, whether it's wikis, blogs, or podcasts [PattiD] Netvibes has been fun to integrate for my personal too [Drew Smith] Vidya, yes, I'd love to do a whole session just about Second Life. [Carl DiNardo] i would enjoy that [john prusch] ...Reducing workload but increasing interaction... [Shauna Schullo] Drew, I did this with the Team Wiki tool in BB and it worked pretty well. Each group had a page and other groups were asked to make comments. [Vidya] On the PC platform, I've really liked SharpReader as a desktop agfgregator. Google Reader is my choice for a web based service. [Enid Karr] Good, I've read about Second Life but don't really see its educational value (yet). [Vidya] Unfortunately, the wiki and blog tools are only available in the high-level version of BB :-( [Drew Smith] Shuana, interesting...are the updates to the wiki available via RSS? [Vidya] yes, Drew, they are [Shauna Schullo] Yes, Vidya and they are far from perfect even in that version [Vidya] Enid, Second Life is much more than an Web 2,0 tool [Shauna Schullo] Drew, no I do not think so, but they did enhance it this year to make it easier for youto see how contributed so it is easier to grade than it was. [Vidya] it's an immersive world and no, it's not a game :-) [Enid Karr] I'll give it a bash then, thanks! [Vidya] so I ahve heard Shauna :-) [Shauna Schullo] We are thinking about using Second Life for work force development. [Shauna Schullo] Environments such as mining and ship building [Vidya] Enid, Second Life can be a little daunting when you explore it on your own because there is no game aspect to it, so if at any point in time you want me to hop in,let me know, I will :-) [Enid Karr] Thanks for the offer! [Vidya] there are quite a few educators teaching in SL right now [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Enid said "I've read about Second Life but don't really see its educational value (yet)." I believe that this is what we have had to say about most of the Web 2.0 resources that have been discussed in this session! And I applaud the attitude implied in your comment... it's useful to watch, explore these new things... but the issue we are beginnign to address this year in the TLT Group online activities is the resulting overload. [Shauna Schullo] SL has the ability to build environments that you can not do elsewhere and then use them collaboartively. I think this may be its real strength [kotlas] Vidya, could you tell us what courses? [Jan Sauer] Is there an easy intro to Second Life. I've got an avatar, but can't figure out what to do next [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] TMI/TMO/TMS = [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Too Much Info; [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Too Many Options [Enid Karr] I just thought "wow!" [Vidya] there's been an English composition class, there's a research class going on in January, architecture of course, [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Too Much Stress [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] TLT = Teaching, Learning, & Technology OR "Too Little Time" ! [Vidya] Jan, there are some great intros on YouTube, you can access my del.icio.us site for my SL links, my handle is "mapetite" [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] TMI/TMO/TMS ==> TLT [Vidya] but like I told Enid, having someone in there does help. [Jan Sauer] Thanks vidya, I'll try it again. [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] MIT has 2nd Life space [Vidya] Essentially, if you are on your own, just explore places. InfoIsland is a great place to visit [Drew Smith] Vidya, if you run into Drew Rodinia there, that is me [Vidya] as is the International Space Flight Musuem :-) [Drew Smith] yes, I couldn't read the threads too well while I was talking [Vidya] I'll keep an eye for you Drew, I'm "totally vavoom" ;-) [Drew Smith] LOL, ok [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Michael, you're mellifluous! [Drew Smith] yes, it is! [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Michael, are you over 25? Heh heh [Carl DiNardo] lol [Kevin Kiley] First time participant - Enjoyed the webcast and new ideas presented. Thanks! [Drew Smith] you're welcome, Kevin! [Drew Smith] I'm usually guilty of using the text chat area for making funny comments while someone else is speaking. [Drew Smith] yes [Steve Gilbert TLT Group] Go ahead [Carl DiNardo] hi [Lisa Star] hi charlotte [Shauna Schullo] Go ahead Charlotte we hear you [Drew Smith] go ahead, Charlotte [Drew Smith] yup! [Michael Strait] What I find is that it's easier to ignore what is coming in my ear than the text on the screen which is more interactive. [Vidya] here's an intro to SL from NMC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9VZKTT6gZ8 [Shauna Schullo] The NMC also has space. If you institution is part of it you can join in on some good stuff [Sue Espinoza] Joanna, will this session and the one from December be available in podcast formats that we can put on our iPods? :-) [Jan Sauer] thanks vidya. I'll try it. [Vidya] I'll find some more :-) [Michael Strait] I do quite a bit of video conferencing and that is less frustrating than this audio only approach. [Jan Sauer] This was great. I'm coming back for future sessions. [Drew Smith] thanks, Jan! [Drew Smith] not yet [Vidya] and here's another look at SL: [Shauna Schullo] I se infoIsland.org [Carl DiNardo] yes [Michael Strait] yes [Enid Karr] nope [Enid Karr] yep! [Vidya] http://www.fmstudio.com/secrets/?p=1 [Vidya] sure! [Vidya] yup :-) [Vidya] it's a podcast [Drew Smith] if anyone would like to know more about Second Life...feel free to contact me at dsmith@mail.usf.edu [Jan Sauer] can't see it yet [Vidya] but it's a good one ;-) promise [Carl DiNardo] I want to thank you all [Drew Smith] you're quite welcome, Carl [Jane Harris] Thanks y'all. :-) [Sue Espinoza] :-) [Drew Smith] oh, I bought myself my first iPod about a week ago! [Enid Karr] Thanks very much - I have a lot of new leads to follow now. [Sue Espinoza] Same here, Drew. :-) [Lisa Star] the audio is already in MP3 form, we then have to load them somehow [Lisa Star] but we don't want to load the whole thing [Drew Smith] Joanna, you want to break them up?
