[sally gilbert] I tried the URL to see you pic and didn't get anything. Can you check the address? Robin [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Was that supposed to be a URL for Joe Floyd picture? Didn't work for me either [Ilene] haha! Yes, I saw that! [Laura Nicosia MSU] so funny! [Ilene] I liked the line about us all wanting to pay to watch TV over again in a little tiny blurry screen [Laura Nicosia MSU] oh good! [Lisa Star] Daily Show last night - Viacom vs. You Tube : [Ilene] Drew, did the slides get sent? [Lisa Star] I gort part 1 [Lisa Star] I got it, that is [Lisa Star TLTG] They won't go to TLT as a whole because they are too large so let's try the pieces. [Michael Robinson BC] Scott Overmyer, Director MSIS Program - Baker College - Flint, MI and Toronto, South Dakota [Loan] how do you raise hand ? [Ilene] Librarians rock! [Lisa Star] nadia, you cannot copy the slides from here, but we'll post them online [nadia n BCM] great - thanks [Ilene] Yippie! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] I'm relieved! Great slide, great start! Off we go! [Alex Kaufman] I want to put multiple checkmarks [Ilene] This is from March 12 [SteveGilbert TLTG2] The digital recording being made will be avail to you by Tues; it will include all text chat, all images, and all responses (check marks) [Alex Kaufman] Hmm, it's growing so fast though that today it was at 4.9 million [Alex Kaufman] They're adding about 10-20 thousand registered users every day now is what I read... [Laura Nicosia MSU] that number is key [Ilene] Whew! We'll have to update that slide again soon! [Alex Kaufman] =) [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070323SecondLife.htm is the URL for the Web page that is serving as our home base for this session - ALL links, etc. referred to, including links to the archive , are accessible from that page [Alex Kaufman] Ah, that number is calculated by adding all avatar-toavatar transactions I believe... [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Is that correct, that more US$ than Linden$ were spent? [Laura Nicosia MSU] i know several who do [Ilene] The official Second Life handbook says there's about 1000 people who make something like real money on SL as opposed to sort of pocket change. [Lisa Star] workshop homepage - for more info: http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070323SecondLife.htm [Alex Kaufman] Yes, the big media story was a school teacher in Germany became the first real-money millionaire off Second Life [Alex Kaufman] She can be found at AnsheChung.com [Ilene] If you do second life education on YouTube, you'll find interesting things. [Alex Kaufman] =) [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] What was the teacher selling? [Alex Kaufman] real estate [SteveGilbert TLTG2] no [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] SL real esteate or first? [Alex Kaufman] Buys it, fixes it up, and resells it - SL real estate [SteveGilbert TLTG2] I didn't do anything with it at all [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] a SL flipper [sally gilbert] lol [SteveGilbert TLTG2] I was shocked! [Ilene] ifrank@lib.usf.edu [SteveGilbert TLTG2] [Phil Long] current SL Linden dollar exchange rate is 266 Lindens per US Dollar [Alex Kaufman] That sounds about right [Monica Holmes CMU] There can still be an issue if you buy a new computer with a lower graphic card. [Alex Kaufman] Yes, I'd say steer clear of Intel Integrated graphics [Ilene] Yes, Monica, you are right - and new Vista machines don't all have the proper drivers yet! [Alex Kaufman] You want a gaming graphics card like an ATI Radeon or something =) [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.activeworlds.com/ Active Worlds [SteveGilbert TLTG2] See ref. to Edwin Abbott's classic Flatland - ref on home page for this workshop [Ilene] If you want to be flooded with info about SL, use that mailing list! [Phil Long] Or the Croquet Project http://www.croquetproject.org [Alex Kaufman] ActiveWorlds has been around forever, my friend and I worked with the beta out of Microsoft when we were in 8th grade - my brother is still a heavy user of AW if anyone has questions about it. [Laura Nicosia MSU] Tons of mailings [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] url? [nadia n BCM] how do you join the mailing list? [Laura Nicosia MSU] that's it [Ilene] We have a link to http://secondlife.com/education - and there's a link there. [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] thx [Ilene] It's archived so that helpful. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Link to SLED forum a\vail from web page for this workshop - url is [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.simteach.com/forum/ [Ilene] Now we've had 60 or 70 avatars show up at librarian meetings! [Charlotte Johnson] Info Island was created by Alliance Library System in Illinois [Alex Kaufman] Very cool, that's impressive [Laura Nicosia MSU] great site [Ilene] They were just noted as Library of the Future - an annual ALA award. [Ilene] Yes! [Ilene] And that's Jeremy Kemp in his magician's role [Lisa Star] how did you decide where to build? [Ilene] The ISTE is the International Society for Technology in Education has good meetings - and good socials! [Ilene] We were given a building! [Lisa Star] nice! [Alex Kaufman] Ah you didn't have to do any construction yourself? [Ilene] Right now, our building is free to USF. [Ilene] We're freeloaders! [Laura Nicosia MSU] that's great. we pay fees to maintain our sites [Ilene] But the Alliance Library system got some donors to give land for library experimentation. [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] how difficult is it to get a "free" building? [Alex Kaufman] They could land there virtual helicopter on that... [Ilene] Someone gave me a "multiviewer" that sets up a slide show. [Ilene] Molly, it's getting harder to find something for free. We were just in the right place at the right moment. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Has any USF administrator noticed that you're doing this and using USF logos, etc. ? and wanted to influence HOW you display such things? [nadia n BCM] that persian rug looks expensive [Steve S] what kind of cost is involved in setting up a virtal presence like the one for USF? [Drew Smith] there's a fireplace in there now, too [Joe Floyd] I donated that rug so they got it cheap. [Alex Kaufman] Oh, you can always right click items to find out the original creator or owner of an item - that would have helped with reporting the motorcycle [Laura Nicosia MSU] last night, i was in a warehouse (sl) and got hundreds of items free [Monica Holmes CMU] What is the learning curve on living on Second Life? [Phil Long] ($9.95/month now) [Alex Kaufman] I'd say the learning curve is pretty steep but the knowledge sort of builds on itself. [Anne Bishop] What are some of the educational uses for Second Life other than the CS students' scripting? [Phil Long] Right [Ilene] Anne, we're going to talk about some other educational uses. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] $6 or 9.95/month in real US dollars gets regular influx of Linden dollars [Phil Long] REAL US [Monica Holmes CMU] Alex, can you give me some pointers on learning to live on Second Life? [Lisa Star] easier to get forgiveness than permission? [Phil Long] That didn't work at MIT ;-) [Ilene] We figure they will love it [John Dennett] Joanna: exactly! [Lisa Star] it's school spirit! [Alex Kaufman] Monica, I certainly could, why dont we private IM on that? [Monica Holmes CMU] Okay [Ilene] Monica, let us know what questions you have about living on SL. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Phil, how does it work at MIT about building things labeled "MIT" within Second Life? What sort of permission needed? Any guidelines? [Phillip Harris] Will there be any discussion of the education appliction? [Joe Floyd] Yes they will be discussing that later. [nadia n BCM] fancy [Laura Nicosia MSU] it was a great event [sally gilbert] what is the commuication medium? [Phil Long] We have a whole section of the legal department at MIT who care about the MIT Brand. I can at another time go over the issues and resolutions that we worked through. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] So one educational use is for free 'overflow' audiences for lectures. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] So, do Harvard stuents particpate in that course some of the time ONLY via Second LIfe? CAn non-harvard students participate in teh same course? Can non-Harvard students ask questions of the Harvard faculty and get responses? [Jeffrey Clark NDSU] Is the cost of all islands the same or is the cost based on the "size" of the island? [Scott] Can you manipulate objects in SL? Can the avatars manipulate things? I know you can launch urls and transport yourself to other places ... But ... could you pick up a cup of coffee? [Scott] Nice... [guest] You right click on an object and chose an action. [nadia n BCM] why was it on 2nd life? why not on a 'regular' site? were they trying to target a different or particular audience? [Lisa Star TLTG] This is suppose to be second life - why is is starting to look so much like the first life?? [guest] Because people are the same. [Laura Nicosia MSU] the library of the primitives teaches you step-by-step how to build things [Drew Smith] Lisa, LOL, good point [SteveGilbert TLTG2] What is "touching" an object like? Presumably the answer to that might differ greatly depending on whether or not you're in a pornographic area...? [Susie Henderson] Is USF using Second Life for instruction? [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] People ned to think outside the First Life. [Drew Smith] Susie, not yet [fred winter neh] Second Life nightmare, as described at last fall’s Internet2 meetings: a virtual classroom with virtual desks and virtual students looking at a virtual PowerPoint presentation. Seems like a lost opportunity for the fully imaginative possibilities of the virtual environment. [guest] The furries think outside RL (Real Life) [Lisa Star TLTG] Exactly Marie! [guest] Visit Casablanca for an amazing educational application. [Drew Smith] go ahead Steve [Drew Smith] sure [Ilene] We've got some slides of Casablanca in a sec! [Lisa Star] cheap study abroad [Laura Nicosia MSU] Svarga is a great place too [Ilene] Ohio University spent abotu $980 in set up fees - and pays 150 a month in fees. Island prices are up a little since then. THEN they spent $30,000 for development! That is NOT necessary! [Ilene] You can start for free and find places you can share and experiment with before committing a lot of funding. [Joe Floyd] $30,000 US? [SteveGilbert TLTG2] This audience is probably at least somewhat unusual with respect to use of voice on Internet - because that's what we're doing now! [Alex Kaufman] Hmmm...well high end servers are expensive - so it's hard to say what's justified or not [Alex Kaufman] Server space, rather [Ilene] We had some faculty spend about $2000 over a year - and then incurred some very incidental costs to buy a building and furnish it. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Educational implication: sense of presence of a group, not just of individuals who happen to be speaking [Ilene] Yes, Ohio spent $30,000 real US dollars - but their buildings, etc. are very extensive. [Lisa Star TLTG] Yes 30,000 here is the Ohio story link http://campustechnology.com/articles/45246/ [sally gilbert] do you mean "talk" when you say "talk" [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Great question/focus for future sessions: what kinds of people "feel" more part of a group in a Sceond Life "scene" than in text chat room, telephone conf call, etc.? What elements of the Second Life scene make that feeling stronger? weaker? [Veronica Diaz at Maricopa CC] Steve, can we include some of this data somewhere at the end of the presentation--or somewhere else [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] One virtue/defect of imitating First Life is that people ignore the environment and focus on what they're doing (conversation, for example) [SteveGilbert TLTG2] All text, images, etc. ... in this session will be included in the digital archive [Laura Nicosia MSU] there's a lot of interesting research on rhetorical implications in sl [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] What do language teachers think about the "talk" issue? Does it matter if students are not actually using their voice? [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Laura - can you provide us with some refs to that research? [guest] lost sound [LTAD Valencia CC] Our language teachers are adamant that voice has to be included in instruction. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] We're recording the whole conversation, Veronica. We'll put the URLs on the home page for the webcast. Does that meet the need, or are you thinking of something else, too? [John Dennett] just lost your audio [Ilene] Texting is practice writing, so some language teachers are interested in that. [sally gilbert] you bet it matters if they are or are not using their voices [Steve S] no sound. [Veronica Diaz at Maricopa CC] yes, that's perfect [Lisa Star] uh oh [Ilene] Ooops! some lag? [Veronica Diaz at Maricopa CC] no sound [Lisa Star] lost drew [Susan Boyd] No sound [Laura Nicosia MSU] look up intelligirl, sarah robbins sites. she's got lots of links, blobs, etc [Veronica Diaz at Maricopa CC] sound is back [fred winter neh] sound is back [Ilene] Yes! [Lisa Star] hi drew [Phillip Harris] Lost sound but now found [John Dennett] back, yes [Susan Boyd] great, it's back [John Dennett] lost you at "dangerous" [fred winter neh] lost again [John Dennett] lost again [Laura Nicosia MSU] sound is lost [Lisa Star] lost you again [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] one again [Phillip Harris] lost sound again [Alex Kaufman] hmm [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] gone [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Third educational element: creating a mood, some kind of affect, that's educationally useful. [Ilene] Oops~ no sound again~ [Alex Kaufman] sound [fred winter neh] yes [Alex Kaufman] yep [Laura Nicosia MSU] got you [Lisa Star] do most people type in english? [guest] yes they do in my experience. Some german [Laura Nicosia MSU] most do, but many languages are used. i spoke with several avis from italy and mexico last night [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Fourth element (Mentioned earlier): student projects - designing something for use. For both professional and general education in design. [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] We write in Russian! [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Fifth element: potential for learning a second language. THe text chat and audio would each have distinctive advantages for that. [Alex Kaufman] Joanna, there are a lot of languages available actually, I've walked through some asian areas where I didn't have the fontset loaded so no characters were visible. [Ilene] Lots of librarians! [fred winter neh] other; federal funder [Ilene] Language instructors are interested in creating environments that are like the country. [Ilene] Joe found these images [Alex Kaufman] I like that a lot [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Sixth: create exhibits that the student can manipulate, move through, in order to get a sense of 3D, movement, function [guest] My challenge is geting students into SL w/out tech, social problems [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] THere is something to be said for the anonymity of working in a foreign language without an accent. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Molly, a related advantage is the slightly slower pace of chat, for someone learning to express himself or herself in a second language. [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] yes, very true [Ilene] This is the Casablance island [Ilene] O - Casablanca [nadia n BCM] hahaha [nadia n BCM] ! [Laura Nicosia MSU] i was there, too [Ilene] I didn't know how to take off my shoes when I went there the first time. Tsk tsk [Ilene] Whew! [guest] Not odd--we had a conversation about whether it was appropriate to visit as a non-believer. [Laura Nicosia MSU] behavior study is great for anthropologists and sociologists [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] For educational purposes, if you're showing pictures or video, what is the tradeoff of doing it in 2nd Life versus online in other ways (web pages; streaming video on web) [Drew Smith] sure [Ilene] Yes, we can hang around for sure. [Susie Henderson] Drew and Ilene - [Lisa Star] I hear you [Ilene] I can hear [sally gilbert] now I am [Bonnie Hunter] I hear you [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] I can hear you [nadia n BCM] i hear [Joe Floyd] yes I'm [Steve S] i can hear you. [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] i har you [Norm Vaughan Calgary AB CAN] I hear you!! [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] hear [Phillip Harris] sound is fine [medaline] I can hear you [Ilene] Susie, what's the question? [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Yes, ask Drew & Ilene now [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Good! [Lisa Star] we're going to stay online for some more Q&A after this! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Then Ilene [medaline] will this session be archived for access? [Ilene] Yes, it'll be archived. [guest] Apologies, I have to leave for a meeting. Thank you very much. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Full session, including the next 30 mins will be archived [Lisa Star] medaline - this session will be archived at: www.tltgroup.org/oli/archives.htm [medaline] I could not login and thought I was a minute too late from the Reference Desk [medaline] I only caught the last 15 minutes [nadia n BCM] can the archiving information be emailed to us? [nadia n BCM] please [Lisa Star] nadio - yes! [nadia n BCM] thanks [medaline] thanks [SteveGilbert TLTG2] You will all receive notification of archive location, but, once again, use http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070323SecondLife.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG2] That URL has and will have ALL important links for/from this session AND MUCH MORE! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] We'll start "informal session" at 3pm EDT by asking SteveE and Joe to voice whatever they want from/about the text chat [robin smith] Is there a means to resolve virtual conflict (ie. combat?) [SteveGilbert TLTG2] VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT WE'RE NEARER THE BEGINNING THAN THE END OF USE OF EDUCATIONAL USE OF SECOND LIFE - LOTS OF ROOM FOR INVENTION [Susan Boyd] Thank you very much...have to leave now...archives are useful! [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] There is a noo-violence rule. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] SALLY [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] no-violence [Anne Bishop] You've shown many things that can be built or created. Are there tools for this or is scripting required? [robin smith] not violence per se, but conflict resolution [nadia n BCM] i hear bird [nadia n BCM] s [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] We lost you Fred [Lisa Star TLTG] We lost you [Lisa Star] oops - lost Fred [SteveGilbert TLTG2] sALLY? [Drew Smith] Sally has the mike [Ilene] OOps Fred, want to try again? [Bonnie Hunter] Fred - lost sound [Drew Smith] Ilene does [medaline] thanks have to leave for a short meeting [Ilene] There's a real sense of "being there" when you are in Second Life. [Ilene] I think that might be one of the real advantages. [Laura Nicosia MSU] reflecting on the stories we put forward by our body language, appearances and so forth are all open to interpretation and reflection. we can critique the stories-in-process [John Dennett] thanks everyone! [fred winter neh] Here's my question: what would this very select group think about NEH offering grants workshops in Second Life? How would/should these differ from NEH's regular funding opportunity workshops? [Lisa Star] ACRL - Assoc. of College Research Libraries [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] TLT Group Gathering at ACLR Conference in Baltimore. Saturday March 31, 2:00 - 3:00pm EDT, Room 340-341. face-to-face only. please let me know if you can come: kurtz@tltgroup.org [Ilene] You can be on SL and really collaborate including moving things around together, deciding where they should be. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Next FridayLive! on top 10 objections to assessment and how to deal with them : it's especially for people who provide assessment services, or who are involved with accreditation, or program review - anyone likely to get involved in discussion where "assessment" could be a hot button. [Alex Kaufman] Pardon me, are you opening it up to anyone talk via the mic? That's in the last few minutes or something? [Drew Smith] Alex, yes, we will. [Alex Kaufman] =) [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Alex, yes once we finish the formal session in a moment. [Lisa Star TLTG] Visit:http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/ZS61992 http://ctlsilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/ZS61992 [Lisa Star TLTG] kurtz@tltgroup.org [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] You can also put your suggestion for new topics in the survey above. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/zs61992 [Ilene] NEH workshops in SL would get to groups of people who can't afford to travel - but of course you'll get people who have the capabilities of running SL. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] deductible [Anne Agee] Fred, NEH Workshops in SL sounds like a great idea. Would save on travel/lodging expenses. [Ilene] Fred, can you talk about NEH digital grants? I understand they are out there. [Marie Carianna Tulane Universit] NEH grants for further exploration in SL for educational purposes is a great idea. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] You can complete this survey in less than 2 minutes and you can even do it while listening to the remainder of this - next 30 minutes of Q&A etc. http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/zs61992 [Lisa Star TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_TLT-SWG/donation.htm [catherine petersen] I really appreciated the intro workshop that Ilene and Drew developed. [Drew Smith] Thanks, Catherine! [Laura Nicosia MSU] we need a follow up to the sl in higher ed [Ilene] Catherine, thanks! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] CatherineP - you mean the "5-minute workshop"? [fred winter neh] Ilene - I did a session on NEH's digital grants last Friday. Steve has it in the archive. or fwinter@neh.gov; 202/606-8287 [catherine petersen] It is difficult to get across the idea of SL in slide pics only [Laura Nicosia MSU] right catherine! i want to fly [Laura Nicosia MSU] and teleport places [fred winter neh] i'm here -- the qu was posted on the chat [Drew Smith] Catherine, I agree. The videos do a better job [Alex Kaufman] I love that quote! [Ilene] Ok! I know that Beth who did the British Lit classroom has applied - or will apply for one. [Lisa Star] someone else asked that was hold a similar session INSIDE second life [fred winter neh] Still Life with Woodpecker is the/a source. [Laura Nicosia MSU] sessions within sl either with NMC or at a learning center would be ideal [Ilene] We would like to try getting as many people as want to into SL. But you'll have to make sure that you can make the software work on whatever computer you use. [LTAD Valencia CC] We recently tried holding a session in second life and the session didn't go so well because of the number of particpants (we had 35 people) [Ilene] You can join SL for free. Main thing is to pick your name carefully because you can't change it [Michael Robinson BC] Thank you. It was very informative. [Drew Smith] Joe had already voiced a Q [catherine petersen] yes, but the tech requirements would be difficult. I am doing 2 sessions for my university and working on 'tou' of ed. informal and formal learning spaces in SL [sally gilbert] lwhat's tou? [fred winter neh] LTAD -- was 35 too many or too few? [catherine petersen] sorry tour [Alex Kaufman] too many - depending on the server [Ilene] It's hard to do more than 20 avatars at a time in some spaces. [Alex Kaufman] I mean, it depends on the server [LTAD Valencia CC] Too many. Even with very high end graphic machines we only saw about 1/2 our participants and the speed and performance were greatly diminished [catherine petersen] must turn off overhead names or it gets razy [catherine petersen] crazy [fred winter neh] thanks. [Lisa Star] what is the term again? [catherine petersen] grievers [Drew Smith] griefers [Ilene] griefers [Laura Nicosia MSU] griefers [Lisa Star] ahh [robin smith] are there institutions using SL for criminal justice studies? [Laura Nicosia MSU] yes [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2006/11/03/who-are-the-griefers/ [Drew Smith] it's like disruption in a public chat room [Laura Nicosia MSU] i experienced several bombers while at the LIbrary a few days ago [robin smith] in SL who makes up the rules for the culture? [Drew Smith] Robin, nobody and everybody [catherine petersen] I got caught in a cage [Laura Nicosia MSU] some private islands have convenants [sally gilbert] gated communiyties [SteveGilbert TLTG2] [Are there 5 stages of griefing?] [Drew Smith] yes [Jane Harris UNCG] if you were using it as a class, are there FERPA issues? [Laura Nicosia MSU] yes [Ilene] At least 5 stages [Lisa Star] hi Alex [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] In the Flashlight Program, we're designing survey templates that can be used to gather feedback from academic users of Second Life (e.g., students in a course or workshop). If there are issues/purposes you'd like to see such survey(s) address, please let me know. [Ilene] You can set permissions on your land. [Drew Smith] it's like security permissions on Web sites and pages. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Alex, pls tell us about yourself - what drew you to Second Life, etc. [Joe Floyd] You can also lock the doors on your buildings. [Ilene] You can also lock buildings. [Drew Smith] you can control who visits, who can create, can modify, etc. [Drew Smith] great! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] We were VERY pleased when we heard that Alex was willing to particpiate in this session! [Laura Nicosia MSU] we have several areas for ed purposes that are locked and others that are open (like a sandbox) for people to learn and experiment [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] What academic uses of Second Life do you see as MOST compelling - uses that might be the best places for a college to try because of the value-added of 2L relative to the best other ways of doing the same thing (or something similar)? [nadia n BCM] i was hoping for information that was directly relevant to educational purposes. im a student in my early 20s. . and i cant understand how 2nd life is more useful.. than say google or even wikipedia. if i am seeking information, why would i take a second (and more complicated) step to get that info [Anne Bishop] Is the speaker from Duke aware of the Croquet work going on there? [Ilene] naida, I think building things is very interesting! You can create exhibits, areas that might be historically accurate. You can create imaginary or "real" environments. [Drew Smith] Starwood Hotels has done that with their new Aloft chain. [catherine petersen] WEll I worked with some face to face students that used a gallery in SL to hang their historically concieved exhibits of art [Lisa Star] I also like the idea that you can create exhibits or projects that would be impossible or dangerous to create in the real world [Drew Smith] Joanna, exactly...flight simulators, for instance [SteveGilbert TLTG2] What are the educational advantages? Disadvantages? Must be both! [fred winter neh] Steve, [catherine petersen] yes, and there is the Play2Train that recreates disatsers and uses simulation to respond to those [Laura Nicosia MSU] collaborative writing, case study analysis are good examples [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Are there some kinds of people who are much more/less likely to find Second Life especially helpful as learners? as teachers? [fred winter neh] i'm happily lurking. the question got posted after I lost my mic. [Lisa Star] catherine - that would cost a lot ofmoney in the real world! [Lisa Star TLTG] Great job Ilene and Drew - hope you will continue to share your eexperience. [Jane Harris UNCG] thanks all - gotta get [Joe Floyd] Homeland security has also used areas of 2L to do disaster preparedness. [Laura Nicosia MSU] collaborative storytelling is wonderful [Joe Floyd] Here was Fred's question. A question for the group:[fred winter neh] Here's my question: what would this very select group think about NEH offering grants workshops in Second Life? How would/should these differ from NEH's regular funding opportunity workshops? [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] The risky thing about simulations is where the simulation diverges from reality. Is 2L a really good way of creating simulations? of what? for example, can you do physics simulations that adjust gravity? or viscosity? or are we just talking about simulated shapes and spaces, for design purposes? [nadia n BCM] chat rooms, discussion boards... [catherine petersen] and the recreation of Camp Darfur is very powerful to experience [Drew Smith] Steve, actually, you can play with the laws of physics there. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Thanks Drew [fred winter neh] thanks, Joe. [Ilene] Your relationship with your avatar is... interesting! [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Storytime - group of avatars exchanging text - I would absolutely NOT like that myself; why wouldn't a telephone conference call work better? Sharing paper photos of all of each other in advance? I'm being a little provocative - but not entirely... [Joe Floyd] Steve, it's a great place to set up working labs so...if you're teaching genetic concepts, you can have rooms set up for people to do genetics experiments and do the lab portion of their class there. [nadia n BCM] agreed [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Educational use: interactions that benefit when students from different cultures interact [Ilene] Steve, I don't know if talking on the phone would be as enchanting as sharing a space where the birds are chirping and the sun is setting and everyone has their victorian costumes on. [Joe Floyd] The advantage is that you can cross pollinate your flowers and not have to wait a whole season to see what the results are. [catherine petersen] I think it important to include the tools outside SL as also a very important part of the collaborative and participatory aspects (ed) of SL [Ilene] And to follow up what Joe said, there are areas set up where the plants and flowers grow - i.e. the landscape changes as it ages. [nadia n BCM] thanks [catherine petersen] like list serves, blogs wikis [Drew Smith] Fred, just fine [Lisa Star] hi fred [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Great, Fred [Laura Nicosia MSU] but, you can create new projects, in process, too. things evolve and change with interactions of various avis [Alex Kaufman] yes, hi fred =) [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] SteveG and I did a study for MIT last year where a real issue was whether the students treated their laboratory experiments (which they were doing at a distance from the equipment, using the web) as 'real.' So one issue to get at with formative evaluation of labs is the extent to which the students see the experience as 'real' (and whether that's a bug or a feature). [SteveGilbert TLTG2] What about NEH making grants in $Linden? [Laura Nicosia MSU] great idea Steve G [Joe Floyd] You have to watch the Architecture Video Fred. It will answer that question. [Ilene] Getting things in and out of SL is an issue. [Ilene] They are running their own scripting language. [Drew Smith] You can import images (textures). [Drew Smith] but not objects as such [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Alex, there are other programs like 2nd Life that DO permit such importing, right? [fred winter neh] got it. too bad. the images wouldn't be enough. [Alex Kaufman] Yes, but a lot of things can be recreated using the proprietary buliding tools [Anne Bishop] Steve, yes--Croquet allows importing of 3D models [Ilene] So far though... no importing of things. [fred winter neh] does anyone know if Linden is a nonprofit? [Alex Kaufman] The other possibility is the open sourced code available now [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Key topic for next time? Advantages/Disadvantages of SL for teaching, learning ---.... [Ilene] Linden is profit!! [Joe Floyd] I don't think so. [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] Is Croquet leading to a populated world like Second Life? or is it more often a relatively empty space for building things and interacting iwth them? [Laura Nicosia MSU] yes please. i need the url [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] yes, great idea! [Laura Nicosia MSU] yes. discipline specific pros and cons would be great [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] http://CTLSilhouette.wsu.edu/surveys/zs61992 [Steve Ehrmann -TLT Group] That's the URL for our feedback survey, where you can give us your suggestions [Ilene] There's still a lot of experimentation going on. [nadia n BCM] whats is (if any) the difference btwn 2nd life and simms? [Molly Thomasy UW-Madison] Sure, but sharing things that have worked or not thus far will stimulate further experimentation. [Lisa Star] can you play music in 2L? say a club or concert hall? [Alex Kaufman] absolutely [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Thanks, Molly! [Joe Floyd] Yes you can Joanna [Ilene] SL is opened ended - You could do a simm inside SL [Joe Floyd] It's actually one of the things I like best about 2L...lots of music. [Laura Nicosia MSU] there are jazz clubs, blues clubs, inddependent concerts [Ilene] Yes you can play music - including live music! [Steve Tomblin] Any idea about the stand alone server software? When it will be available? how much it will cost? [Anne Bishop] I think Croquet is heading toward a strictly educational space rather than a social one, so perhaps it won't be "populated" with people as SL is. Too soon to tell. [Joe Floyd] Susan Vega [Laura Nicosia MSU] U2 is doing a live concert soon [Ilene] Suzanne Vega did a concert [Laura Nicosia MSU] not U2 Duran Duran [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Other ideas you would like us to emphasize/explore in future sessions about Second Life? [Laura Nicosia MSU] actor's theater productions for dramas and other genres, poetry readings [Ilene] Steve T, are you talking about stand-along servers for SL? So far no word on that. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Alex: speeding up SL develpment- open sourced viewer; can run own second life server "to a limited extent" heh heh [Ilene] Alex, can you run things for a class for example? [Steve Tomblin] Yes the Second Life server software. thanks [Drew Smith] the interaction of SL with Moodle will also be interesting [Ilene] Isn't it just development of the code right now? [Laura Nicosia MSU] the down time issues on wednesdays is an issue, however [Drew Smith] like the difference between university-specific course management systems, and the open Web [Alex Kaufman] Well, right, that's why land prices in high traffic areas are what they are though =) [Joe Floyd] Want to reiterate that the Australian video Ilene mentioned earlier is a great, pretty in-depth examination of 2L. The url is:http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/special_eds/20070319/default_standard.htm [Laura Nicosia MSU] how do you handle the wednesday morning down times? [Steve Tomblin] I think there will be an issue when it comes License Agreements. If a Prof. relies on a second life classroom they may not want to rely on Linden for support if their servers go down. [Ilene] Don't schedule anything for Wednesdays [Laura Nicosia MSU] [Laura Nicosia MSU] ok [Drew Smith] little did he know [Alex Kaufman] It's the new 3D internet [Alex Kaufman] That's how IBM describes it [Drew Smith] it's uber-cool [Ilene] Yes! I'm running into people who used to be on MOOs with me way back when. You all from Buena Vista... Drew and I used to be on collegetown moo! [Alex Kaufman] And they have 24 islands in-world [catherine petersen] It was that NPR piece LOL [Laura Nicosia MSU] it's the 3D and the real-time synchronous learning [Drew Smith] anytime [Drew Smith] And we want to do a 3-week workshop *in* Second Life! [Lisa Star] bonnei1 [Lisa Star] oops - Bonnie Hunter [Laura Nicosia MSU] glitches happen [Ilene] If anyone wants to get us, I'm ifrank@lib.usf.edu [Wilda Rowe] I would love to have info on the workshop/ [Joe Floyd] Thanks for asking me to participate. [fred winter neh] thanks all, great session! [Ilene] Drew is amsmith@lib.usf.edu [Drew Smith] thank *you* Steve [nadia n BCM] thanks [Laura Nicosia MSU] bye [marcycarrelusfsp] thanks you [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2006/11/03/who-are-the-griefers/ [SteveGilbert TLTG2] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/20070323SecondLife.htm [Drew Smith] you can now return your microphones to their locked, upright position [SteveGilbert TLTG2] [Lisa Star] drew and ilene - great job! [Drew Smith] uh oh [Lisa Star] sorry about taking away so much of your presentation time [Drew Smith] no problem! [Drew Smith] we're librarians, we're flexible [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Eternal vigilance, never believe 1st confirmation! [Drew Smith] trust but verify [SteveGilbert TLTG2] "Trust but verify" [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Excellent, Drew! [Lisa Star] especially with IT [Drew Smith] Yup [Drew Smith] ok, I'm outta here. (I need a coffee)
