[Maureen Greenbaum] did my mic work ok?? [Rebecca Kurtz] just great maureen! [Lisa Star TLT Group] I have the slides! [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] actually I was just hitting control to copy something into a document while we wait [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I have a mic but hate talking in online meetings [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] Done thanks! [jannrandlesteds] I see I'm not the only one trying to multitask! [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Is there life without Multitasking? [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] [jannrandlesteds] First time for me. [PamGades] This is my first time for me. [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] I have used similar systems. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] This is my first time with ivote but have used other systems like this [Don Carter] first time, but I am fine...looks familiar enough [Rebecca Kurtz] kurtz@tltgroup.org [SteveGilbert TLTG] Hey, I'm back and this looks great! [SteveGilbert TLTG] 1-866-866-2244 pin 704 9928# [SteveGilbert TLTG] I have begun recording; Lisa & Rebecca would you also record today as back-up? [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Steve keeps cutting in and out for me. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Anyone need more explanation of any of these options? [Rebecca Stevenson] Same for me! [SteveGilbert TLTG] You can vote for 2 out of 3 [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] It's a fact of life - multitasking [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] I agree. In education today, we are all some what experts at multitasking! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Not hearing you yet [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] Can't hear him. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] No sound here either. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] my mic may not be working properly, sorry [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] yes [SteveGilbert TLTG] Hi don, can here you!~ [Lisa Star TLT Group] yes! [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] yes Don [PamGades] Yes [Rebecca Kurtz] yes [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Yes [Steve Ehrmann] Hi Don [jannrandlesteds] Yes. [SteveGilbert TLTG] I'll need synch browsing [Lisa Star TLT Group] you have it [Don Carter] just got new stereo microphones [Lisa Star TLT Group] No problem if I need to reload slides! [Don Carter] it is warm and sunny today, over do degrees [Don Carter] over 50 [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Whew, it's a whopping 14 here with full sunshine. [PamGades] Don, I want to be there. -18 here today with wind chill. [Lisa Star TLT Group] Pam - glad to know other share in the weather sorrow with SD! [Don Carter] it was 15 when I got up this morning [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] YES [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Yes [jannrandlesteds] yes [Lisa Star TLT Group] http://facit.cmich.edu/whats-on/archive.html [Lisa Star TLT Group] [Lisa Star TLT Group] When you finish the video - type "finished" here in the text area. Welcome SteveGilbert TLTG The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Lisa Star TLT Group] If it does not open in a new window - right mouse click on the link above in the text chat area above. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Started video at 2:27pm Eastern [Steve Epstein] Are we live yet [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're "watching" a 5-minute video that begag for each individually at 2:27pm Eastern [Lisa Star TLT Group] http://facit.cmich.edu/videos/tfft-last-day.html [Diana Quinn] I had pictures and no sound for approximately 2 minutes, and then the image froze. [Lisa Star TLT Group] Anyone else having technical difficulties? [T Smyth] no problems [Don Carter] still going, but one particular scenario of interest to me, are the "intro" courses, especially science and social science courses that are ostensibly a students first course in an area, which often is in reality their last course in that discipline [SteveGilbert TLTG] Should be almost finished for those who had no trouble; apologies to others! [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] When you switched slides, the video dissappeared but I could still hear the audio. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Finished [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] Good session for first year teachers [T Smyth] finished [Rebecca Kurtz] finished [Diana Quinn] started again and it is working now [PamGades] finished [jannrandlesteds] finished [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] finished [SteveGilbert TLTG] If it starts again, close the window [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] finished here [Ray Purdom] I couldn't get it. It kept negotiating [jannrandlesteds] No video, but that's on my end. [Steve Ehrmann] Just now finished. After Steve started talking [Maureen Greenbaum] i have quick time ...last class - audio just finished [Rebecca Kurtz] yep [T Smyth] yes [Maureen Greenbaum] pink line [Steve Ehrmann] yes [PamGades] yes [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] I'm sorry, what was the question? [Steve Epstein] Two audio tracks [Steve Epstein] How to stop the other audio? [Steve Epstein] Video not being seen but hearing him continue. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Audio was great. Didn't see the video though. Probably my version of QT is too old. [jannrandlesteds] Steve's audio keeps cutting out for short periods of time. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] better as audio because there was no text to view, just a talking head. No value in watching someone speak. Would be more valuable as a powerpoint with audio [jannrandlesteds] speak up? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Maureen - likes slides + voice better [Rebecca Kurtz] not hearing ray [SteveGilbert TLTG] Not hearing Ray [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I like the videos that can be viewed at one's leisure and/or used to spark conversation at a brown bag or other such event [PamGades] I think seeing the person is nice, but accompanying that could be a slide of the main points. [Steve Epstein] video is a nice alternative to PPT alone [Maureen Greenbaum] no sound [Diana Quinn] not hearing Ray [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] No reason for video in this particular presentation. It would have been better if he included some visuals. [Steve Ehrmann] I agree. This particular video would have been a fine podcast or audio-only. The voice was valuable, and it was short enough that it could be a good trigger for a synchronous discussion like this one [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Audio with text is nice! [T Smyth] I'm a big proponent of video when it adds value. In this particular instance, I agree that it was just a talking head... [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I'm not a fan of PPT I prefer video but there should be some other visual as well [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] Charts, images, etc. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] video should only be used to show something, a process, machine, or something that can't be shown with pictures and/or audio [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cannot hear [Rebecca Kurtz] not hearing T Smyth [Diana Quinn] Can't hear T Smyth either [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] yes Joan [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] No sound here either. [PamGades] Yes [Diana Quinn] yes [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Yes. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] yes [SteveGilbert TLTG] Hooray [Lisa Star TLT Group] yes [Joan Cook - CCM NJ] yes [T Smyth] yes [Don Carter] yes [Brenda Green UTHSC] Yes, I can hear you. [jannrandlesteds] I agree that talking heads are a dime a dozen and can be distracting. A still of the speaker and a few key points would be a good idea. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] I agree with you there Ray! [jannrandlesteds] Having a "bank" of these would be helpful to launch workshops. [SteveGilbert TLTG] SUMMARY: UNLESS there is some value to live motion visuals, most seem to prefer audio + a few pictures or slides [SteveGilbert TLTG] Ray is describing Todd's approach of promising depts that he would give a MAXIMUM of 5 minutes "workshop" with follow-up available LATER for those who want more [Rebecca Stevenson] We have just developed a webpage with a group of 2-3 minute videos in which individual faculty talk about their favorite Writing to Learn techniques. Unfortunately, it's too soon to tell how our faculty will react to these mini-workshops which are primarily "talking heads." [Don Carter] cutting out quite a bit [Lisa Star TLT Group] Here are some samples on the Central Michigan site: http://facit.cmich.edu/whats-on/archive.html [Lisa Star TLT Group] Ray - do you post your 5 minute presentations on site? [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] I send out weekly teaching and tech tips, so that's somewhat like 5 minutes workshops, but they are web/text based with directions. I will be adding audio to screen capture but will still send these links out by email. It a push method instead of pull method. You have to put it in front of them. [PamGades] If these 5 min. videos are placed online for people to visit, how much are they used? [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] Personally I would listen more to a talking head than simple audio (podcast)...a face makes my conscience want to pay attention more and not multitask as much [Ray Purdom] No, but I should. I send out a list of possible topics and have the departments chose [SteveGilbert TLTG] Pam, good question - we should check with Todd [SteveGilbert TLTG] Angela - does the face need to be "live" or would a photo be OK? [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I like the talking head [Ray Purdom] I think 5-minute workshops as podcasts is terrific idea [SteveGilbert TLTG] Angela, hear you well! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Angela - more similarity to live person makes some pay attention more consistently [SteveGilbert TLTG] SteveE: oral + phone follow-up option [Diana Quinn] The pre-recorded thing can be used in other workshops [Diana Quinn] Small interview with expert - record and reuse [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] I am experiencing good success with the 5 minute prepared workshop that is emailed to faculty and then follow up with a short review at faculty meetings. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] It really is just a decision between the personal touch and convenience. It just depends on the situation and the time available. [Lisa Star TLT Group] We used to put out - text based emails once a week - that required about "5" minutes of read time. Then link to further info or workshops. [PamGades] I like the idea of pushing it out weekly or twice/month to faculty with a link to the topic (and links to past topics). [Steve Ehrmann] Experts are good, but do you think there are special advantages to having peers creating these for peers, including discipline specific tips (maybe shared across institutions) [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] my mic isn't working [Lisa Star TLT Group] Some folks - just need to see it in print. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] No mic here. I'm new to this. [Maureen Greenbaum] Yeah -- why not emaii it!!! [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Steve, great idea about having peers prepare some of these. [Steve Ehrmann] I like pushing print, too, but I think 5 minutes may be too long for print-only. People might sit still longer for audio; what do you think? [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Yes, I have a regular item on the agenda. [PamGades] It is difficullt to get time at meetings. I like the idea, but I don't think would get invited very often - their meetings are tight. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] They like me [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] That idea would shift from presentation format to more of a discussion format. Welcome SteveGilbert TLTG The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Maureen Greenbaum] scheules --everyone has a differnent one - that's why we link teaching ... asynchronous --is a must [Lisa Star TLT Group] keep going on this topic [Steve Ehrmann] Eli, which agenda are you on? institutional faculty mtg? departmental mtg? [jannrandlesteds] I like both peer and "expert" mixed. 5 minutes at a faculty meeting could get some good discusson going. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Institutional, but we are a single purpose college. [Rebecca Kurtz] we can tackle Doug's question next Friday [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes [Steve Ehrmann] yes [PamGades] yes [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] Yes. [Maureen Greenbaum] we hear y [Don Carter] we have a shared outreach program...eLearning, Faculty Dev., Academic Assessment, and Library...go jointly to dept. meetings and offer intro to our services and function, now we are providing 5-10min development pieces recently [Rebecca Kurtz] steve - you'll need to repeat your idea about Extra-support. your audio dropped on those words [SteveGilbert TLTG] Dan - SOCIAL dimension of workshop, etc.... [Steve Epstein] Perhaps there is a need for a very focused agenda in advance [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're exploring hybrid-hybrid options to deal with BOTH social and substnative elements [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] I think the 5 minute workshops are so focus on one minute topic that hopefully will prompt further discussion (formal and informal). That's how it is working for me. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Acculturation and Techniques/skills/resources [SteveGilbert TLTG] sound good Diana [Lisa Star TLT Group] Not every topic will 'hook' everyone - just like headlines on a news paper - but if it encourages someone to read the 'rest of the article' so to speak. [Don Carter] sorry...gotta run...mor meetings, thanks for fun at lunch [Rebecca Kurtz] thanks Don! [jannrandlesteds] This has been interesting, but I have to go to a meeting. Will check back. [Lisa Star TLT Group] Ray - are your sessions focused on presenting a technology, talking about problems and solutions? Or other? [Steve Ehrmann] There are two kinds of teasers (at least): one which is without much value unless you come back for more, and antoher (like the one we just saw) that stands on its own. I like the latter. [Rebecca Kurtz] Thank you Jann [Steve Epstein] Gotta go also [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] The other aspect of this 5 minute workshop that we haven't talked about is how much time it takes to develop one. [Bruce Brazell Navarro College] This was really great. I'm new to FridayLIVE and plan to become a regular! Thanks for providing this service! [Rebecca Kurtz] good to hear Bruce! [Ray Purdom] Lisa - It can be all of those. I should have posted my list of about 20 possible topics. I've had requested topics too [Steve Ehrmann] I'm off to another call. Catch you later! [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] I am excited to look at moving from Online to F2F. That was an outcome of my dissertation research. I'd be glad to share some of my participants comments. [PamGades] I'd like more on the topic of faculty development/training. My campus seems to want all on-to-one training, which we can't possibly provide with our current staff problems. [Ray Purdom] It's on my other computer [Steve Epstein] I've been doing a lot with onoine quizzing to promote coomperatinve learning, time on task and mastery learning. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Steve, can you get Ray's list and send it out to all of today's participants? I'd be interested. [Steve Epstein] The idea of useing tech to do things you cannot do without it. [Steve Epstein] Some course get better and can do other things that is not possible in f2f classes. [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Perhaps a web 2.0 workshop for teaching and learning. [PamGades] thank you. This has been very good. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Diana: has been exploring more "blended" activities [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I think it's funny that we actually had discussions about "banning" facebook in our open computer labs at the beginning of Fall semester and now our career center is using it to adverise their services to students [SteveGilbert TLTG] It can be VERY threatening for IT professionals to bring in Web 2.0 activities [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] web 2.0 is a great topic to discuss [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] What about the controversy over using Wikipedia? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Lisa: Teachign Fac/DEV vs. Teaching undergrad classroom [Angela Megaw Gainesville State] I love that idea too Lisa [SteveGilbert TLTG] SHOULD REFLECT SAME GOOD PATTERNS, IDEAS.... [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Yeah Lisa [Dr. Eli Collins-Brown MCON] Thanks so much. [Diana Quinn] Time to go now, [Rebecca Kurtz] thanks lisa for all your help and great contributions today [Diana Quinn] Time to go now [Rebecca Kurtz] thanks steve! i'll see everyone later! [Lisa Star TLT Group] Thanks everyone! [Dan Mandell SMC] Well done! [Brenda Green UTHSC] Good-by [Dan Mandell SMC] Yes, I'm interested in the topic ...though I'm far from being there!! [SteveGilbert TLTG] This is VERY brief - recording [SteveGilbert TLTG] Extra-Campus Resources & Support! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Liver & Onions!!!!!!! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Little groups of women talking about how they prepared liver.... now have faculty with mean age 70+... Don't want to give up something they have already mastered to comfort level [SteveGilbert TLTG] Liver & Onions = Google Docs! [Dan Mandell SMC] Maureen, I couldn't agree more....in my school, we need to have early adopter instructors making the pitch....technology staff don't have the same effect. [Lisa Star TLT Group] That was great Maureen! [Lisa Star TLT Group] I have to run! [Dan Mandell SMC] Launched fine! [SteveGilbert TLTG] begin 3:16pm Eastern [Ray Purdom] finished. I am going to have to go [Dan Mandell SMC] finished [Maureen Greenbaum] cool [Maureen Greenbaum] dan your comment is so true [SteveGilbert TLTG] Bye' all [Dan Mandell SMC] I'll remember the liver metaphor for a long time
