Welcome SteveGilbert TLTG The TLT Group is pleased to have you join us today. [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Voice is good [Alex Yu] I hear your voice. [SteveGilbert TLTG] I just sent a copy of the integrated, revised PPT slides to Cindy, Sally, Rebecca, Joanna. I'm assuming that I'll load and "push" them. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Has Rebecca been on yet? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Integrated does NOT include the standard intro or ending. [Lisa Star] ok [Lisa Star] be right back [SteveGilbert TLTG] Only includes slides for this session... begins with title page, ends with 3 slides about Clothing the Emp; closing ideas; extra 30 mins [Jean Kent] I can hear you fine [Jean Kent] I'm just going to listent today [Jean Kent] Yes. [Teresa Wehmeier] sounds good [Cindy Russell UTHSC] thanks! [Alex Yu] I don't have a microphone, so I will listen only. Your voice is clear. [Lisa Star] I'm going to load the intro slides [Lisa Star] steve sounds good, breaking up a bit though [Jean Kent] I can hear you but there are some interruptions. [Daniel Klein] No canada? [Bill Hill] Is there another Seattle-lite here? [Enid Karr Clark University] Hi I'm, Enid Karr, Science Librarian, Clark University, Very Cold Worcester, MA [Lisa Star] Hi Marianne [Lisa Star] I hear you [Marianne Kline] wrong button sorry i dont have a mike [Lisa Star] say hello! [Sue Espinoza] Hi, y'all. I'm Sue Espinoza, at Texas A&M University-Commerce, about an hour northeast of Dallas. I teach in the educational technology, higher education, and school librarian programs. :-) [Bruce Brazell] Greetings all. [Daniel Klein] Greetings! I'm Daniel Klein, Sys. Admin, Lakehead University in a thawing Thunder Bay, Ontario [sally gilbert] hi Lucie! [Lisa Star] woah, sounds slow! [sally gilbert] that's a first! hpw slow is slow? [Lisa Star] not coming through clearly for me [Bruce Brazell] Very slurred there! [Lisa Star] click the mic icon again to turn it off [sally gilbert] Is it because she's in a very cold part of the country? [SteveGilbert TLTG] I hope Joanna is correct, because I'm heading to St. Paul in a couple months! [Lucie Johnson] It's warm today [Lisa Star] hi Lynne! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Eureka! [Lisa Star] yup [sally gilbert] too loud [Lin Wu UTHSC] Everything is OK [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] Jeff Narvid, instructional designer at UC Berkeley, CA [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] howdy [Troy Challenger] Troy Challenger, Faculty Technology, Calstate Monterey Bay [Arta Szathmary BCCC] Arta Szathmary, Bucks County Community College, Newtown PA. [Lisa Star] Hi Heather [SteveGilbert TLTG] The Hamline U. folks and the Old Dominion U. folks have both been very adventurous, supportive: We're going to try a dual-location live event for a small part of the day at those two campuses on the same day in May! I'm grateful for the oppportunity. [Lisa Star] still slow [SteveGilbert TLTG] I'll be on campus at Hamline and Lisa Star will be on campus at ODU [Lisa Star] If you could only hear yourself! [Bruce Brazell] Still slow Lucie, [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] whoa! [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] It's Darth Vader. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Lucie, either your Internet system or your nervous system might need some caffeine on this late Friday afternoon! [Lucie Johnson] It's Bethel's connection for sure... [SteveGilbert TLTG] 5 Minutes till the "real" beginning! [Ran Gust-ELAC] sorry, but the phone info went by too fast for me to record. [Lisa Star] 1-866-866-2244 user code 704-9928# [Ran Gust-ELAC] thx. got it now. [SteveGilbert TLTG] I'm doing the "back-up" recording, and already began! [Teresa Wehmeier] Hi; I am Teresa Wehmeier with Seward County Community College, which is located in lovely Liberal Kansas...TGIF [SteveGilbert TLTG] Here, I'm sending a non-private message! [Lucie Johnson] Lucie Johnson, Professor of Psychology and Faculty IT consultant, Bethel University, St Paul Minnnesota [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] Cute Steve [Eli Collins-Brown] Hi all, I'm the Director of Instructional Technology at Methodist College of Nursing in Peoria, IL. I turned my faculty onto the Google docs wiki and they have run with it. We currently have 10 wikis being conducted across the college, 5 for faculty development and 5 for student projects. Sorry I do not have a working microphone. Glad to be here! [Helen Barrett] Hi! I'm a retired teacher educator, living in the Seattle area, experimenting with GoogleDocs for online portfolios. [Randolph Hollingsworth] Randolph Hollingsworth, Kentucky Virtual Campus, in Frankfort - Director of Product Development [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] Google wiki? Or using google docs as a makeshift wiki? [Ran Gust-ELAC] ELAC = East Los Angeles College, a CA community college, I'm a librarian. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Eli, that sounds reallyinteresting - note that Cindy & Heather are from health sciences [Lisa Star] Lisa Star, Senior Consultant for the TLT Group - located in Sunny South Dakota! [Eli Collins-Brown] Thanks Steve. I'm actually not a nurse but come from the distance and online education arena! [Teresa Wehmeier] I was thinking of using it as a collaboration/project management environment. [SteveGilbert TLTG] You bet! [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] actually there's one more in march - the 30th - unscheduled as of yet! [Bruce Brazell] Same here Teresa. Google docs would provide an interesting resource for students to collaborative build a living document. [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're receptive to your suggestions for March 30! my youngest sister's birthday. [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Looks like we're going to have a LOT of great ideas generated today re: using Google Docs & Spreadsheets! [Teresa Wehmeier] Yes, and they can share it on their portfolio, if available. [eric feinblatt] Hi there. I'm Eric Feinblatt from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where I am the Coordinator of our Center for Excellence in Teaching. [Samantha Hines U of Mt] Hi, I'm Samantha Hines, Distance Ed Coordinator and Social Sciences Librarian at University of Montana-Missoula. [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_OLI/FridayLive/20070309GoogleDocsEdUsesResources.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_OLI/FridayLive/20070309GoogleDocsEdUsesResources.htm [Enid Karr Clark University] Loud and clear [Lisa Star] hi Lisa [Lisa Star] sound good [Lisa Star] yay! [sally gilbert] yeah! [Randal] Hello everyone. [Diana Quinn UniSA] saw it yesterday - stunning [Sue Espinoza] Yes, it's a great example of the 5-minute workshop. :-) [Lisa Star] to view the recorded archive of this and other FridayLive Sessions visit: www.tltgroup.org/oli/archives.htm [Lisa Star] google dogs sounds like a hot new shoe brand [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're now at 60 simultaneous log-ins - another record for TLTG's FridayLive! A tribute to Cindy & Heather! [Bruce Brazell] Congrats! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Each of you is part of this nice achievement! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Some good teachers may not articulate their objectives in this way, but we find especially in this kind of "environment" it is very helpful to have a clear overview of the structure/goals for our session together! [Sue Espinoza] There [Sue Espinoza] There's a category missing -- heard of it but haven;t had time to explore to know if it would be helpful. :-) [Randal] I have the MS suite in the office and OPenOffice on the laptop. [Randal] SO haven't really ahd need to use GDS much. [Teresa Wehmeier] I see tremendous opportunity for institutional assessment with writing artifacts...we have been fussing with it for three years. maybe there is something to it! [Teresa Wehmeier] The possibilities here are because of the collaboration possibilities. [Bruce Brazell] Sure. GDS would be accessible by everyone in the institution so that there would never be a cross platform issue. [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're not claiming that GDS is the only or overwhelmingly best tool of this kind... we are comfortable in advocating its use for the purposes being described. [Lynne Groves] Peer Edits and Review seem like a good potential applications also! [Randal] I'd like to know more about the collab aspects -- we use TrackChanges in MSWord a lot but nothing beyond that. [Daniel Klein] Since we've recently deployed the Education Edition of Google Apps for Your Domain, and since D&S is available, we're quite curious about exploring it [Steve Ehrmann] With GoogleDocs you can have several people editing the same document at the same time. It's not always neat but amazingly it does work. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Daniel, are you at Lakehead U? [Eli Collins-Brown] version control is an issue with passing around a Word doc as well. [Teresa Wehmeier] I agree Eli [Randal] at the same time would be fun (usefull too!) [Daniel Klein] Steve -- yes [Randal] Skype, yes all the time [SteveGilbert TLTG] Great, we're hoping to hear more about Lakehead's experience either today or on antoher of our FridayLive sessions! [Lisa Star] instant message [Bill Hill] list serve, web conference [Lynne Groves] citeUlike & blogging [Bill Hill] IM [Lynn Usack] conference phone, Webex or other live Web delivered context [Daniel Klein] Thanks, Steve! [Teresa Wehmeier] I would definitely say both. [Steve Ehrmann] Flashlight Online can be used by multiple authors, even at different institutions, to edit the same survey [Randal] note: can we come back to GDS conference calls? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Sure, since I don't know about that!~ [Bill Hill] remote desktop [Randal] at your leisure of course -- it was on the whiteboard [Daniel Klein] second life as an educational tool -- interesting [Bonnie Hunter] Meant combining GDS and a conference call [Randal] did I get through? [Steve Ehrmann] yes Randal I heard you [Teresa Wehmeier] Randal: tracking changes in MS Word is not really collaborative; more like inhibitive. Collaboration means virtually to me. [sally gilbert] it makes it possioble for us to have a distributed organization [Teresa Wehmeier] Google has Instant Messaging but not aware of a phone format (YET) [SteveGilbert TLTG] Right - using GDS live with a conf. call is something we do often... our "CheatSheet" gives some good advice about how to manage that effectively - what we've learned from EXPERIOENCE! [SteveGilbert TLTG] I put marks at both ends! [Lisa Star] same here - it depends who you are working with [Randolph Hollingsworth] are we talking about the technology platform? or the protocols involved in rolling out the platform? [SteveGilbert TLTG] ONE REASON: I, personally, am not very good at close collaboration of certain kinds. After 20+ years, I feel I'm just beginning to become a good writing collaborator with Steve Ehrmann! He is a more "natural" writing collaborator than I am. [Randal] Nice comments -- I'm not sure we have a -- among my immediate colleagues -- a culture of computer-based collaboration. [Bruce Brazell] It seems to me that 'writing collaboration' is a skill that you learn by doing. [SteveGilbert TLTG] One of the features that first attracted us to use GDS was how much most functions are like most word-processor functions/commands, [Ran Gust-ELAC] Anticipating a problem: might some students not 'cheat' with a collaborative tool? [Randal] exactly -- accountability rules!!! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Randall - good point about "cultural" issues related to collaboration [Bruce Brazell] I believe that the cheating issue is handled by the way changes are tracked. [Teresa Wehmeier] Changes (I believe) are associated with the person logged in, so cheating should not be a big issue. [Randolph Hollingsworth] somebody could IM a contribution that another person then enters into the GDS [Daniel Klein] privacy and ethics-related concerns are raised at our institution [Diana Quinn UniSA] What does Google do with all this data? [Ran Gust-ELAC] The potential issue is that students could use GDS independently to write for others, even for pay. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Automatic saving + automatic backups on computers/servers that we don't have to worry about... if my computer crashes I can still get back to the document in GDS i was working on! [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] How does this compare to Nicenet? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Kathy - pls tell us a little about Nicenet [Daniel Klein] Ran: good point; mind you, with websites selling materials of all sorts, does GDS exacerbate the problem? or simply make it easier? [SteveGilbert TLTG] These comments on the whiteboard will be recorded as part of the digital archive that is being automatically created today. [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] One of our faculty uses this for student peer paper collaboration and loves it. But it requires log-ins, passwords, fails often as I understant it, etc. [Randal] The idea of using IM to send in immediate thoughts makes me think further into groiup work on wiki. Everything being immediate and chageable based on one's particlar presence [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] No, I was referring to a product called Nicenet! [Randal] Instant library reference tool, although IM has more saturation. [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] Soory] [SteveGilbert TLTG] Sally Gilbert is serving as "Voice of the Chat" today - trying to keep track of the chat and offer summary or raise questions from time to time [SteveGilbert TLTG] No way any of us can keep up with this stuff - Web 2.0 options. [Randal] Elluminate. NetMeeting (LiveMeeting), the tool we're using now [Jean Kent] SightSpeed [Diana Quinn UniSA] wikispaces [Ran Gust-ELAC] Horizon Wimba [Daniel Klein] blogger has been used by several of our faculty in a couple different ways [SteveGilbert TLTG] Sally had sent me a private messagte that the theme of ethics has arisen strongly in the chat - but we can come back to that when we get to the more open discussion part [Sue Espinoza] Does GoogleDocs work with Mac and Safari? [Charlie Morris] Yes it does. [Charlie Morris] in my experience anyway [Randal] can you edit powerpoints? [Samantha Hines U of Mt] I have used it on a Mac with Firefox many times [Lisa Star] works well in Firefox, too [Daniel Klein] no powerpoint yet, as far as i know [Charlie Morris] doesnt do ppts [Randal] thx [SteveGilbert TLTG] Formatting can be a little flaky [Lisa Star] Google docs does not run on Safari - at least right now [Sue Espinoza] Thanks, y'all for the mac info. :-) [SteveGilbert TLTG] We're going to schedule a special Mac session - discuss compatibility of many kinds [Sue Espinoza] Great idea, Steve. :-) [Diana Quinn UniSA] Have others found that it seems to work best when it is a new document written in GDS, rather than an existing doc opened in GDS? [UIndy] do you have to have a gmail account to use GDS? [Randal] I like this feature: "View RSS feed of document changes" [SteveGilbert TLTG] How to: see CheatSheet http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ajcxc7jhbwxg_30dvc7rb [Steve Ehrmann] We're experimenting with a GoogleDocs approach to planning how to use a TLT Group subscription. This document is in publish mode: a way of allowing some people to collaborate while other people to just see a document. This particular document is publicly published: everyone can see it, while about 30 of us can edit it. If you'd like to be a collaborator so you can improve this, let me know: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ah77rqpdrwgj_24fsstjb [Lisa Star] You do not need a gmail account - but you will need to register for a google account if you do not have for other applications such a Google search or Blogger. [Steve Ehrmann] We're hoping our subscribers will create teams that will edit the plan I just posted, and then use it to guide and assess their subscriptions. [Ran Gust-ELAC] Step-by-step coaching is a great approach if GDS makes it practical. [SteveGilbert TLTG] You do NOT need a GMail account to do this stuff BUT a couple of things are easier if you do. So far we have NOT found any problem about having GMail accts - we're not getting spammed [Lisa Star] The good news is once you have entered the Land of Google - you don't have to continually re-register [Bruce Brazell] That is true. One time registration on Google makes you part of the google-verse. [Charlie Morris] What about a Google Group? Discussions, Docs and Spreadsheets, file repository... [Lisa Star] Charlie what do you mean by a google group? [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] How "well" does GDS work on a dial-in connection? [Charlie Morris] http://groups.google.com [SteveGilbert TLTG] DiannaQ: issue doesn't seem to be so much whether you begin the doc inside or outside GDS - rather , it works best if you keep the format WITHIN the GDS very simple and do the more detailed formatting in offline versions! [Richard Laramy TTC] works fine on dial up [Charlie Morris] try it out, it's really neat [Lisa Star] On dial up it will take a few seconds longer during the automatic saves - but still works well. [Bruce Brazell] It would work as a well as any web 2.0 app over dial-up. Nice thing, GDS is not too graphic intensive, so it isn't too bad. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Our CheatSheet suggests a couple ideas that to enable a group to work on the same document simultaneously - even while participating in a telephone conf call [Steve Ehrmann] Using GoogleDocs in courses is a form of digital writing. There's a chunk of The TLT Group's web site devoted to 'digital writing across the curriculum.' One section has to do with collaboration as an important feature of digital writing. None of the examples are from GoogleDocs, but they illustrate different ways of taking advantage of collaborative writing to teach courses in science, math, education, literature, etc. http://www.tltgroup.org/resources/gx/DWAC/Collab.htm [Richard Laramy TTC] I have used it when my computer was connected through my Blackberry [Randolph Hollingsworth] could the spreadsheet be used effectively to collaborate on building a visual? [SteveGilbert TLTG] Sally? [Charlie Morris] btw, i see that safari doesn't cooperate now, my mistake earlier [Jeff Gima AUP] How do you negotiate the mechanics of getting all your students to create a shared document. i.e. does it work best to create the documents and invite each student to collaborate, or is it better to have the students create their doc and invite you (the prof) to collaborate? [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] Gliffy is a good online program for collaborating on visuals [Troy Challenger] How do you mean you don't need a google account to work on a doc? We would prefer students not having to sign up for an account. [Lisa Star] Jeff - I have seen examples of both - depends on the course and experience of the students [Lisa Star] If it is a first time experience for google docs - faculty creating one as a "sand box" to learn the techniques is a good approach [Diana Quinn UniSA] egos get in the way [Ran Gust-ELAC] Someone will relate what Randal said, right? could not hear a word. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Randal: people get nervous writing first thoughts visible to others... need to be careful about trust in revealing that stage to others ==> emphasizes need to guide, train participants!!! How to respond/criticize usefully, respectfully, sensitively! [Troy Challenger] We have used Flickr for students giving feedback to each others images in a group area...not exactly working on the same graphic document though! [sally gilbert] [Diana Quinn UniSA] What does Google do with all this data? [Eli Collins-Brown] We actually like the fact that they need to create an account so that the wikis are secure, only those invited as collaborators can see what's going on. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cindy: "Co-creation" - nice! [Randal] I mentioned the trust involved in opening up your writing, first thoughts etc., to wide view, etc. Trust. [Ran Gust-ELAC] Very good, insightful point, Randal. [SteveGilbert TLTG] Troy: very intersting idea about using Flickr! could be FaceBook too? [Randal] right, thx, i like the co-creation also. [Eli Collins-Brown] We use GDS in connection with a discussion thread from within Bb. Participants tend to brainstorm and explore thoughts in the discussion thread and then transfer more solidified thoughts and idea to the Wiki [SteveGilbert TLTG] Not hearing sally [Steve Ehrmann] Sally I can't hear you [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of GDS vs. Wikis [Lisa Star] Troy - you don't need a Gmail account - but if anyone wants to edit a document you have to have a google account. Anyone with or without a google account can view if you give permission. [sally gilbert] sorry [sally gilbert] I was in fact speakingt [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes~ [Troy Challenger] Yes..that I understand. But the idea that someone who is invited can add without having to have a google account..is the question. I believe they have to have an account. [Teresa Wehmeier] thumbs up [Steve Ehrmann] In response to Jeff's question about GDS v. wikis, I think of GDS as a wiki. Compared with most wikis, it's easier to use to create documents but it's not quite as natural to create a web of documents using GDS [Lisa Star] i hear sally [Randal] hmm, yes, good point -- different expectations based on the "ethos" of the software to some degree. [Diana Quinn UniSA] One thing I would like to do is use GDS to help students on work placement to journal their experiences and develop critical reflection skills. I am reluctant to do this if the data, which might have industry info in it, is not secure. My question is what happens to the data? What could Google do with it? [Bruce Brazell] Thank you for pointing out that we need to let our students understand that what they write in GDS doesn't have to be perfect. In this way, GDS could become a tool to help students tap into their creativity and overcome writer's block. [Lisa Star] I am working with a faculty member right now who is using Google docs for her graduate students to develop a "group" set of notes. Each person can contribute and at the end they will walk away with a great set of resources they created and edited - together. [Ran Gust-ELAC] Sorry, but much to come per SteveG:11:52:08 [Ran Gust-ELAC] 11:32:18 [Teresa Wehmeier] I guess you may be right Ran, but I think our writing instructors are pretty savvy to cheating. Still, there would be no policing of the activity. 11:35:26 [Ran Gust-ELAC] Yea. I don't want to beat this, but the issue came to mind--as Daniel indicated--it could make it all too easy. So we have to do even betterat policing. But, e.g., we can;t afford turn-it in, etc. [SteveGilbert TLTG] SallyG: Where we go next... ethics, gathering of this info... link "ethics" and "collaboration" issues! [Troy Challenger] I don't see GDS as having the automatic indexing and cross referencing that makes a WIKI work. I can see GDS being used in combo with a WIKI. [Bruce Brazell] Lisa. I like the ideas of collaborative note taking. That's one I could really use. [Eli Collins-Brown] Jeff, I have formatting issues with GDS vs. the wiki I have on my personal web site. I haven't really had time to play with it, but being a Web developer, I want it to do more than it does with HTML tags. [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] steve: right.. Wiki you can really make a hyperlinked-type set of information.. google docs is more flat, but better at making it easy to produce this flat type of content [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_OLI/FridayLive/20070309GoogleDocsEdUsesResources.htm#SharingOption [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] i like that newer wiki software gives a rich text vs wiki markup option for fine tuning the way things look [Randal] thanks for those Sally [Ran Gust-ELAC] 11:37:43 [Teresa Wehmeier] We actually use turn-it-in, and our writing faculty love it. Don't ask me how we can afford it, but there you go... 11:39:21 [Ran Gust-ELAC] In short, a new tool such as GDS requires more training/info for instructors to be observant. 11:41:26 [Teresa Wehmeier] Well, it isn't too difficult, but then I am a little techy compared to many on campus. I thought it was pretty intuitive actually; more so than MS Office in fact. Still far more limited. [Steve Ehrmann] Jeff what wikis do you use that have the rtf formatting? [Charlie Morris] I really think those who haven't checked it out yet, should take a look at Google Groups, very useful [Ran Gust-ELAC] 11:44:30 [Ran Gust-ELAC] Not what I meant. I was 'speaking' in terms of recognizing plagiarism and the like. Better tools to cheat require better assessment. 11:47:17 [Teresa Wehmeier] Oh; got it. 11:48:13 [Ran Gust-ELAC] Shall i send our side conversation to Steve B? 11:51:00 [Teresa Wehmeier] sure; fine. [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] we use Atlassian Confluence [sally gilbert] some schools have students use turn it in prior to "turning it in" [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] you can flip between GDS type formatting (which they call Rich Text) and wiki markup [Steve Ehrmann] Jeff, haven't heard of Atlassian Confluence. [Diana Quinn UniSA] I agre Jeff - if you want structure use a wiki; if you have one page collaboration, then GDS, if it has one main author on which others can comment, then blog. [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] Confluence is a monster [Troy Challenger] We are using the GDS spreadsheet to keep track of incoming faculty projects that we 2 staff and 3 student assistants work on. to keep track. [Randal] This would be a useful linking of the two: [Randal] 14:56:35 [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] you can flip between GDS type formatting (which they call Rich Text) and wiki incorporating Wiki with GDS per Jeffs comment above. [Steve Ehrmann] Jeff, looks like it costs about $50/month for an organization to use Confluence? [Eli Collins-Brown] The advantage of GDS is that non-techy faculty and students have been able to jump in with it without much training at all. [Bruce Brazell] We really should have a workshop that would focus on using collaborative spreadsheets. [Eli Collins-Brown] Yes Bruce, I agree [Jeff Narvid UC Berkeley] I think we use it for free on an open source project/non-profit license [Randal] That will be a good exercise Steve! [Bruce Brazell] Definitely. Looking forward to giving it a try. [Arta Szathmary BCCC] This was a very good hour! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cindy: hopes more feedback from students, faculty can lead to improvements in GDS! [SteveGilbert TLTG] Cindy: We can also get better at using such tools! [Teresa Wehmeier] sally: Seward County actually requires writing assignment submission to turn-it-in. Many in the sciences are also using the tool. [Randolph Hollingsworth] am wondering if the educational uses of GDS may be different (and rolled out differently) based on academic discipline clusters? [Lisa Star] Thank you to Cindy for running a great season and applause to Heather for taking time to share with everyone! [Teresa Wehmeier] good job all [Kathy Saville Marquette MI] Thank you everyone, very nice job today. [Randolph Hollingsworth] Thank you - this was fun to think about [Kate Conners] Thanks for all of the work [Eli Collins-Brown] Thanks! [Teresa Wehmeier] There were a lot of questions about compatability and security of the information. We may want to explore these issues in another session. [Eli Collins-Brown] I think carrying this conversation into GDS is going to be powerful. There we can all share how we are using GDS. [Randolph Hollingsworth] I liked the pre-req to the workshop be that there was some familiarity with the app - so we could think more about deployment strategies [Arta Szathmary BCCC] I liked that your whole team were playing an active role. [SteveGilbert TLTG] I hope many, most of you will participate actively in the GDS we're about to launch for THIS group! [sally gilbert] kurtz@tltgroup.org [Steve Ehrmann] A FridayLive! could be a topic, a tool, an issue, someone to interview, etc. [Arta Szathmary BCCC] interactive slides were great. [Sue Espinoza] I really appreciate the 5-minute workshop that was online for us to use before this session, as well as the other resources to explore before or after. :-) [Arta Szathmary BCCC] Target practice got us going. [Bruce Brazell] I like the team teaching approach. More real life examples would be nice. [Teresa Wehmeier] How about one on iVocalize. I am interested in the tool. [David Matthews] Great session [Sue Espinoza] Agree, Teresa. :-) [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/ivoc/ResponseHome.htm [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/iVoc.htm [Randal] ta dah [Lisa Star] I try [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/ [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI.htm [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI/Schedule.htm [sally gilbert] "Afterthoughts' [Lisa Star] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI.htm [Sue Espinoza] The FridayLive sessions are great as online professional development and preparation for people coming up in this profession. Great to use to recommend to our students -- and just wanted to let two of my students know that I do see them here. :-) [Dana] Hi Dr. Sue- Dana [James] Can you put the page back up with the links to links to related articles? [Sue Espinoza] Oops -- three of my folks are here. :-) [Jackie Onyia TWF] Sorry I am late. I could not get on earlier. Steve, will you be sending out information on this sesion? [Jackie Onyia TWF] Thanks. [Diana Quinn UniSA] nothing [SteveGilbert TLTG] Now hearing a hiss [Randal] LOL [James] Can you put the slide back up [James] with links to articles [SteveGilbert TLTG] sounding fine, Sue [SteveGilbert TLTG] SueE: Wikis, GDS - compare? Why? Expand! [Jackie Onyia TWF] we are [Bruce Brazell] Perhaps the difference between Wikis and Google Docs is an issue of control. [Bruce Brazell] We've been using Wikispaces for Dr. E's class. [SteveGilbert TLTG] How do you spell "Tom Hooten"? [Steve Ehrmann] http://www.tltgroup.org/resources/gx/Digital-WAC.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] no sound [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes [Sue Espinoza] yes! [Dana] yes [Lisa Star] hear you [Diana Quinn UniSA] What do you mean - issue of control - can you expand? [Randal] I like the idea of the mashup between wiki and google docs because they each do different things but could be used to enhance each otehr. [SteveGilbert TLTG] SteveE - "digital writing" http://www.tltgroup.org/resources/gx/Digital-WAC.htm [Bruce Brazell] I think that this would really appeal to our blog/wiki/youtube savvy students we deal with. [Jane Harris] I'm thinking about professional dev for faculty. I think that they would find a session like this interesting, but they would not be able to give up an hour Friday afternoons. I REALLY like the 5-min intro and plan to send that out to the faculty I support. Those interested WILL have time for that. Thanks! [Randal] Thank you for these comments everyone -- I need to depart now for anotehr meeting. TGIF, the powers that be make sure we have our "moments of collaboration" See you next week. [Sue Espinoza] yes, Jane -- I do like the 5-minute sessions, exactly since they can set the stage and maybe develop interest in some longer workshops. :-) [Diana Quinn UniSA] Me too - that 5 min display was great! [Jackie Onyia TWF] After work hours would be great! [Jane Harris] Yes - that was at Lilly South and I was presenting at the same time :-( [Bruce Brazell] Our students are very accustomed to 'on demand' entertainment - available anytime and anywhere. Why not incorporate that kind of theme in the process of writing? Tools like wikis and GDS can help break down that barrier that students have that 'writing' is something you do in class only. [Maureen Greenbaum] brilliant [Helen Barrett] I created an electronic portfolio in GoogleDocs, as part of my research into online portfolio tools. Look at my blog of March 7: http://electronicportfolios.org/blog/ [Cindy Russell UTHSC] so my individual subscription is free this year??? if you go to that! [Sue Espinoza] Steve, as you mentioned in one 5-minute session you did, it is more difficult to do the 5 minutes, but it is so much better and more concise than rambling. :-) [Steve Ehrmann] [Arta Szathmary BCCC] Helen, nice to see you here. I met you at Villanova. [Jane Harris] Cindy - It is terrific! - and I loved the URL refs - a couple of which I skimmed immediately afterwards. [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/OLI.htm [Sue Espinoza] Cindy, I especially liked the attachments feature, where we could take time in the middle or after we went through the workshop. :-) [SteveGilbert TLTG] James requested a re-view of this slide i hope you can read it [Dana] Is there a link to the 5 min session everyone is talking about? I have not looked at that yet. [SteveGilbert TLTG] We'll put all these links on that same Web page we've shown you several times! [Dana] ok [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/ivoc.htm [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_OLI/FridayLive/20070309GoogleDocsEdUsesResources.htm [Arta Szathmary BCCC] It is kind of like an "executive summary", or as my husband reads the newspager in the morning....only the first paragraph of each article. [Lisa Star] i see whiteboard right now [Lisa Star] what is the URL again? [Steve Ehrmann] The slide isn't clickable [SteveGilbert TLTG] http://www.tltgroup.org/n_OLI/FridayLive/20070309GoogleDocsEdUsesResources.htm [Arta Szathmary BCCC] GDS----and best of all... it is FREE! [Lisa Star] You can save a copy of the chat for yourself - FILE> Save Text Chat to file [Lisa Star] that way you can have a copy of all the references here [Lisa Star] (thanks Sue) [Lisa Star] hi Arta [Lisa Star] sound good [SteveGilbert TLTG] yes, very loud [James] Thank you. This was interesting. [Bruce Brazell] We can here you. [Steve Ehrmann] loud but relatively clear [Steve Ehrmann] [Sue Espinoza] sounds good now [SteveGilbert TLTG] Aha! you're making a distinction between your husband and GDS! [Cindy Russell UTHSC] the "break" in the URL makes it non-clickable from the PDF - should be clickable from the slides - and the PDF has the full URL noted on it [Arta Szathmary BCCC] ha ha ha [Jane Harris] Thanks all! [Karen Ryan UWRF] Thank you for this presentation. [Heather Templeton] Thanks for everything- I really enjoyed it. [Steve Ehrmann] bye [Cindy Russell UTHSC] bye everyone. thanks! [Bruce Brazell] Thanks Steve. Great workshop! [Jackie Onyia TWF] bye all.
